What is software? Set of instructions to control computer operation.

What are the major types of software? System software Application software

What is System software? Set of instructions that manages computer hardware resources.

What is application software? Set of instructions that provide more specific functionality to the end user.

What is the operating system? Program that manages the operations of the computer

What are the basic functions of operating system? User interface Resource management File management Task management

What is multi-programming? The management of two or more tasks, programs running on the computer system at the same time.

What are the types of personal application software? Spreadsheet Word processing Data management Graphics Groupware Desktop publishing

What is spreadsheet? Computer software that is used for business analysis, planning, and modeling.

What is data management? Software that supports the storage, retrieval, and manipulation of related data.

What is word processing? Software that allows user to manipulate text

What is desktop publishing? Software that is used to design and print newsletters, brochures, manuals.

What is graphics software? Software that allows user to create, store and display or print charts, graphs, and maps.

What is groupware? Software that facilitates communication, coordination, and collaboration among the people.

What is a software suit? A number of productivity packages bundled together.

What is a web browser? Key software interface to the hyperlinked resources of the WWW and the rest of the Internet.

What is machine language? Lowest-level computer language (first generation language).

What is assembly language? Second generation computer language.

What is high-level language? Third generation computer language.

What is fourth generation language? Computer language that develops applications quickly and can be used by end users easily.

What is object-oriented language? Computer programming language that is based on the data and the instructions about what to do with that data.

What are the components of the hardware? CPU Memory Input technologies Output technologies

What are the categories of the computer? Mainframe Midrange Microcomputer

What is mainframe? Large, fast, powerful computers that handle high transaction processing volumes or complex computational problems

What is midrange computer? Less costly and powerful computers than the mainframe computers that include minicomputers and servers.

What is Microcomputer? Smallest and least expensive category of general-purpose computers

What are the major components of CPU? Arithmetic-logical unit Registers Control unit

What are the types of computer memory? Primary Memory Secondary memory

What are the two types of primary storage? RAM ROM

What are the main types of secondary storage? Magnetic disks Optical disks

What are the major input devices? Keyboards Mouse Touch screen Microphone Pen-based computing Optical scanners Voice-recognition devices

What are the major output devices? Monitor Printer Multimedia
