“Technology as a Tool” By: Brandy, Rose, William, and Alison

Overview of article: This article discusses the importance using technology in the classroom. If a child sees a computer in a classroom, he/she will want to use it. It is important for the teacher to use this to their advantage. In giving the children the opportunity to work on the computer, the teacher will be giving them the chance to have fun in doing something they want to do, but also giving them the chance to learn as they do it. Computer use also engages many different learning styles; addressing visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners at once. This article shows a kindergarten teacher who presents concepts using different activities including stories, computers, pencil and paper methods, and manipulatives.

Key Points: Computer use in a classroom engages all different learning styles. Computers give students the opportunity to have fun while they learn. Technology in the classroom is advantageous because it gives the teacher another source to present the material.

Strengths: The example lesson with technology shows what a teacher could use in a classroom Provides insight into an appropriate program for the lesson being presented

Weaknesses: Only shows one tool to use Gives only one example of how to use technology No other technology is shown besides a computer Article was weak with examples and descriptions of technology

How to implement this in a classroom: In order to implement the key points of this article in the classroom, teachers can use manipulatives, computers and pencil and paper methods in order to teach their lesson. “Technology as a Tool” shows step by step instructions on how a teacher used technology in the classroom.
