The Internet Inquiry Process: How to Succeed in Searching the Web, Simply Debbie Clingingsmith John Liddicoat Maria Moratto Eve Benson Glee Mellor

“The World Wide Web is a uniquely rich resource for authentic inquiry, but students must learn to orchestrate sophisticated strategies to become literate in this complex environment.” Maya Eagleton, 2002

Reality of the Search Experience 71% of adult Web users experience frustration after 12 minutes of searching. National and state standards call for integrating modern technologies, such as Internet, into the classroom. Typical search behaviors of middle school students…

Student Responses 1 : 1. Log online 2. Go to a search site 3.Type in a few key words 4. Press search 5. Click on a site that looks good 6. Write down all information that looks good 7. Go back and try another site until done 8. Sign off

The Solution ( 4 Steps to a successful search ) Step1. Choose your "Keywords" Carefully Step 2. “Tools” for Searching the Web Step 3. Understand how your Search Engine Works Step 4. Evaluate your web site

Advanced Search The benefit of using the advanced search mode is to make your search results specific to your topic. (Remember, it is better to have 10 good web sites to look at, than 10,000 web sites that you have to wade through.) To use advanced search, locate and select the Advanced Search link on the Search Engine’s home page. Type in your keywords, then follow the directions from there and try narrowing your search.

Conclusion The World Wide Web is becoming more commonplace in educational institutions across the nation. Yet, it is still unregulated, similar to the days of the Wild, Wild, West when just about “anything” went. It is time to teach our children to be effective consumers of the Internet. Information literacy is their future.
