Sept 1, Accomplishments for July Silva and Cominsky submitted an update and revision of the GLAST E/PO implementation plan to Larry Cooper at NASA HQ. This is the third urgent request by SMD at HQ for information which has taken 2 person-weeks each time (minimum). We were told that this implementation plan will be put online. Silva finished the "You Are Here" minicourse at the Valley of the Moon Boys and Girls Club. It was sent to Nancy Leon of SpacePlace for review, to Dave Thompson for a final fact check and is now off to the printers.

Sept 1, Accomplishments for July Considerable technical work has been accomplished in analyzing GORT data by Kevin McLin, Tim Graves and others, in order to verify the scientific quality of the images and photometric measurements that we have obtained. They also installed a network cable for Net- cam, so that we can remotely check the status of the telescope and dome and have started installing a flat fielding set-up for GORT. Plait, McLin, Graves, and Hill used GORT to observe the Deep Impact probe collision with comet P/9 Tempel 1 on July 3. The comet was seen to get brighter by a factor of about 2.5 within minutes after impact, and a short period of mild (~10%) brightening was seen before the impact as well. Both of these observations corroborate other ground-based observations of the event. We also observed the new supernova SN2005cs in M51 and may have caught it at the peak. GLAST targets were also observed, as was the newly discovered Trans-Neptunian Object 2003EL61, which may be bigger than Pluto. Sept 1, Accomplishments for July Tim Graves finished his work at Teledyne, doing integration and testing for the LAT MCMs. Kamal Prasad continues his work testing MCMs at SLAC. McLin, Sarah Silva, Phil Plait, Aurore Simonnet, and student Logan Hill have been working on the supernova activities and poster. Revisions are being made after in-house testing. The poster is almost complete, and captions have been written. Hill has written the first draft of an article for the Astronomy Education Review about our Space Mysteries activities, which will feature the two new GLAST mysteries. Student Dakota Decker has been working on the user interface for the Space Mysteries. He has created a system to ask questions and to organize the data. This is all being done in Flash. McLin has started work on writing an observer's manual for GORT and has created a set of observing scripts for taking calibration images at the telescope.

Sept 1, Accomplishments for July Gordon Spear, Tim Graves, McLin, Plait, and Silva attended a video conference with Dan Reichart's group at the University of North Carolina about their SkyNet GRB telescope network. They are well along in creating a network of robotic telescopes to observe GRBs, and we discussed adding GORT to the network. We have been given a test account and will be investigating the procedure. Although they are still in the preliminary stages of this, it is a very promising setup. Graves migrated all our websites to a new server named cosmos.sonoma.edu, and checked for (and fixed) any problems. The move should be transparent to users, but if you see any problems please contact Sarah Silva at sarah "at“ universe.sonoma.edu. WestEd organized a telecon focus group review of TOPS 3 and is writing up the results. We are expecting their review during August. The SSU group finished their in-house reviews in July.

GLAST LAT ProjectCost/Schedule Slides for Monthly Status Mtg. Sept 1, Cost Variance Explanation Why overrun/underrun? The largest amount of our cost underruns are due to our commits. We have about $200k encumbered for our large subcontractors. The subcontractors include Tom Lucas Productions (PBS Show), WestEd (evaluators), and TOPS Learning Systems (TOPS Mod 3). TOPS 3 is about one month away from going to the printers, which will totally close out this subcontract. We just received the TOPS 3 report from WestEd, so we will pay them when Sarah returns. The remaining is money that will be used for the upcoming printing jobs. These include TOPS 1 reprint, TOPS 3 initial print run, AGN Pop- up book, the GLAST Card Race, and educator products/goodies for the Supernova guide. The card game is now at the printers, so we should have that bill soon. What will be done to correct? All but the PBS show encumbrance will be spent by the end of this fiscal year. SSU accounting shuts down for pretty much the entire month of June, and only barely begins to function again in July, so it takes longer for invoices to go through.
