What is Technology? What is Management?

What is Technology Technology = Beauty …those who have it worry about keeping it …those who don’t have it feel deprived and strive to get it

A positive perspective of Tech: Technology is: –Central to economic growth and the creation of jobs –The foundation for improved health, longevity and quality of life.

A negative perspective of Tech: Technology: –Threatens loss of jobs –Threatens loss of careers –Degradation of hte environment (..violation of life) –Destruction of civilization

Whether ‘+’ or ‘-’, There is universal agreement that managing tech effectively is critically important for success and survival Managing tech falls short of what we must achieve.

To guide technology To constrain technology To support technology To condemn technology requires teamwork

those affected feel a right to exert influence

Technology has always had social, economic, and political dimensions. Thus the directions and priorities of technology have always reflected perceptions of what is needed, desired or useful for society.

It is desirable for these inputs to be from sources as diverse, informed, and responsible as possible. Otherwise … –Mistakes –Misunderstandings –Confusion –Equivocal support –Needless controversy

Technology pervades all aspects of an enterprise, and effective management must recognize its pervasiveness and its crucial role in establishing competitive advantage an even in survival.
