Positive outcome: –No objection on the physics program and motivations for high lumi (>10 36 and 75 ab -1 in 5 years) –Polarization an important tool –Very encouraging the positive results from Dafne tests in Frascati. –No showstopper identified GO AHEAD!

SLac July 25,2008 Marcello A. Giorgi 5 Mini-MAC Charge (a)to perform an initial assessment of the current design to review its viability to achieve the design operating parameters. This initial assessment would provide clear guidance regarding perceived weaknesses in the design and would further identify those areas in need of more detailed design work and focused R&D. The goal would be to complete this initial review within the next three months (As of June 2008). (b)to provide initial guidance on potential site-specific issues for Super B at the Tor Vergata site. (c)to provide ongoing, periodic assessments of the design as it matures over the subsequent nine months.

Background not exceeding too much the present Babar, thanks to low current, crossing angle and a careful design of the Interaction Region. One beam 80% polarized (High Energy). Giorgi 7 Very exciting project -- Committee is exhilarated by the challenge Physics requirement of 10**36 cm -2 sec -1 or 75 ab -1 /5yr is very demanding –Requirement of polarization potentially adds complexity Imaginative and ambitious design -- Committee endorses the design approach. Design offers flexibility to either raise the luminosity or compensate for surprises Excellent work by a relatively small group, many of whom have full-time “day jobs” Seeman’s summary – “areas for further concentration”: Committee agrees these cover most of the essential tasks needed before the design can be fully vetted at the performance requirements General Comments J.D. Giorgi 8 Committee considers the SINGLE MOST ESSENTIAL ingredient for moving forward is the formation of a sanctioned management structure which formally incorporates a dedicated machine design team. The team members must have the strong support of their home institutions to work on the design. The team needs a designated leader, who is as close to full time as is possible The project is in need of a formal baseline which is managed with change control tools. However, in several key areas, more work is needed before the design can be blessed The Committee, in consultation with the SuperB team, established a list of topics that are essential for the team to address before the Mini-MAC will be in a position to state with confidence that the machine can achieve its physics goals. It is the Committee’s opinion that these items can be prioritized in such a way that the machine feasibility can be judged six months from now (This assumes that the management structure is formed by late September and that more resources are provided) Nest Steps for Near-term Work J.D. Petronzio and I will meet him next July 31 to update him on the SuperB project and progress and discuss how SuperB is fitting in the agenda for Cern Council Meetings (September2008, December 2008, March 2009)

Giorgi 15 Next Steps Report from Nakada will be presented at RECFA meeting in Athens (Oct.08) KH Meier intends to discuss in the Plenary ECFA in November 28, then give the ECFA recommendation on SuperB to Cern Council. I expect that we will be asked to make a prsentation in front of Cern Strategy Group in December Council meeting.

Quantum Coherence: new and alternative CP violation measurement wrt to  (4S). Unique opportunity to measure D 0 - D 0 relative phase. Increased statistics is not an advantage running at threshold: cross-section 3x wrt 10GeV but luminosity 10x smaller. SuperB lumi at 4 GeV = cm -2 s -1 produces ~10 9 DD pairs per month of running. (using Cleo-c cross-section measurement [  (e + e -  D 0 D 0 )~3.6 nb ] +[  (e + e -  D + D - )~2.8 nb] ~ 6.4 nb ) Time-dependent measurements at 4 GeV only possible at SuperB to extract Phase.

However, the Committee was not presented with a clear set of design choices. However the ring impedances must be halved relative to PEP-II. This requires careful study, and constant attention to the details of the vacuum chamber design. The SuperB team must establish an impedance budget and a conscientious impedance-budget manager –Determine the fundamental performance requirements of the coupled-bunch feedback systems. Build what is needed and make it robust, with special attention to protection against noise sources

The SuperB teams should take full advantage of the simulation and experimental work at CERN and CESR Polarization –Decide on the the gun and injector baseline choices –The Committee endorses inclusion of Polarization in the baseline design for the SuperB machine. However, the particle physicists should continue to study the relative importance of the physics gains from polarization, because it could turn out that the inclusion of polarization presents reductions in the peak and/or integral luminosity. The inclusion of polarization is not inexpensive and polarization could become a target if there are ultimately affordability problems
