Presentation transcript:

During the Colonial Period this British official, from whom the U.S. Presidency was patterned, was granted the power to appoint judges, command the military, pardon criminals, as well as law-making powers.

Executive privilege is considered this type of power

This yearly event illustrates best the advantage of the ‘bully pulpit’ granted to the President of the United States

President G.W. Bush’s withdrawal of support for the International Criminal Court (to prosecute war crimes, genocide) is an example of the power of the president to do this with 2/3 approval of the Senate

The amnesty granted to over 10,000 draft dodgers by former President Carter is an exercise of this presidential power

Exercised by President Clinton more than any other president in history and eventually found to be unconstitutional this allowed more additional legislative control over appropriations bills.

This event in history was one of the first attempts by President Washington to exercise the formal power of the president to enforce the law and establish the idea of federal supremacy.

This president was the first to use political appointments as rewards

U.S. v Nixon is the famous Supreme Court case involving President Nixon’s unsuccessful attempt to exercise this informal power.

Respectively, the minimum age requirement and years of U.S. residency necessary to qualify for President of the United States.

The impeachment of the President for treason, bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors is carried out by this body.

This followed the 1947 Presidential Succession Act which provided for an orderly transfer of power in the event of the President’s death or inability to fulfill the duties of the presidency.

With the approval of the Senate this is one way for the president to have a lasting influence beyond his/her term of office.

These are issued much more frequently by the President than international treaties.

FDR established this mini- bureaucracy to oversee his New Deal programs during the Great Depression

The idea that a candidate with an active-positive personality is suited best for the presidency was developed by this well-known political scientist
