5 Central New York’s Economy: Total nonfarm jobs rose by 2,300 (0.7 %) between March 2014 and March 2015 in the Syracuse metro area. February’s unemployment rate of 6.3 % was below the year-ago level of 7.3 % in the Syracuse MSA. There are still job opportunities in fields such as health care, engineering, computers, skilled trades, customer service, high-tech, scientific, R&D, construction, green-related jobs, leisure & hospitality, and accounting, as well as opportunities for entry-level positions.
