Introduction Definition : OCR stands for O ptical C haracter R ecognition refers to the branch of computer science that involves reading text from paper and translating the images into a form that the computer can manipulate (for example, into ASCII codes).

Reasons for Using OCR To reduce Data Entry Errors To Consolidate Data Entry Human Readable Can Be Used with Many Printing Techniques Scanning Corrections Help blind and visually impaired persons

OCR Methods There are two basic methods used for OCR : Pattern Matching compares what the OCR scanner sees as a character with a library of character matrices or templates Feature Extraction is OCR without strict matching to prescribed templates, also known as Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR ).

OCR by Feature Extraction

OCR System Componenet OCR system consists of a scanner, the recognition component, and OCR software that interacts with the other components to store the computerized document in the computer
