MED2020M Radio and Sound Projects: Work in Progress Danny Green - Producer Jake Walsh - BA Alex Curtis - Presenter/Researcher Dan Atkins - Presenter/Researcher

Aims and Objectives A 28 Minute Live Radio Show Introducing the world of A Cappella To give an insight into A Cappella – what it is, where it originated from, who does it etc? To develop an interactive style – our presenters will be getting involved, having a go at various types of A Cappella and finding out how other people can get involved. To highlight and explore some of the more unusual forms of A Cappella – e.g. throat singing, which may be unusual and new to people, and will further their interests in the subject. To use a wide range of interviews, recordings, and created jingles/beds to give a professional sounding show, that both develops an interest in the subject, and appeals to our listeners. What are the Legal/Ethical Implications? Timetable of Production

Research of Content and Treatment Research Summary – all of the facts and figures that we have gained have been from reliable, and reputable sources. Rajar Statistics Q4 2010: 90.5% of UK population tune in to radio every week (Rajar, Online, 2011) Internet hours are 32 million - (21m in Q4, 2009 – up 54.9) (Rajar, Online, 2011) “Radio listening via mobile phone has increased by 4.1% quarter on quarter with 13.3% of adults aged 15+ in Q4, 2010 saying they have listened to radio via their mobile phone” (Rajar, Online, 2011) Why are these figures relevant – and how will listeners engage with this? What does this mean for our show?

Siren FM Siren FM is primarily aimed at listeners age 9-25 The station broadcasts from the University of Lincoln on 107.3FM and covers the local area. The station is a community radio station So how do we make our content engaging? So our topic needs to reflect this Local Topics/Issues Content suitable for a 9-25 Audience Engaging and Original Content Local Topics/Issues Content suitable for a 9-25 Audience Engaging and Original Content

In keeping with a younger audience – the radio station also broadcasts online, for those who wish to listen using a computer or mobile phone. ( In Q – Rajar Figures indicated: “In the year demographic listening remains stable with 30.7% claiming to have listened to the radio in this way: [using a mobile phone] 14.9% say they listen at least once a week, while 3.6% say they listen every day, up from 2.3% in Q3, 2010” (Rajar, Online, 2011) Siren FM – Online As well as being available to listen to via the Siren FM Live Stream/Radio – our piece will be available on our website to download

Where would this Show fit in? Siren FM – a broad and diverse range of shows for the 9-25 age range Our show matter would typically appeal to an older audience – our challenge is to make this appeal to a younger audience City Vibe – news programme produced by and for young people. New Wave – produced by Young People, for young people – showcasing local talent. Groundworx – showcasing local music, bands, DJs etc. Specially aimed at younger musicians.

The challenge of making our Show appeal to a younger audience. Typically – a show covering the history of a musical style etc. would not appeal to a younger audience, but this can be overcome with suitable treatment and content. Our presenters will be energetic, lively, and enthusiastic Creative treatment; jingles, beds, and recordings We will connect with our listeners in a range of ways; Facebook, Twitter and our Website Siren FM

Key Contributors Alan Goldsmith – Harmony Lincs We are keen to explore the background for Barbershop singing, and look at the various elements involved. Talking about it’s history, how it is performed etc. We have made numerous recordings of Harmony Lincs, and will be getting Alex and Dan involved in trying some Barbershop under Alan’s guidance. Darran Adams – Beatboxer Darran has been beatboxing for a number of years – and performs regularly. We are keen to look at where beatboxing originated, and how it has developed. We will also be featuring a live performance from Darran. TBC – Female Vocal Chorus We have also been in contact and have recorded with a Female Vocal Chorus, and would like to interview a member about this – to look at how female groups have developed within barbershop etc. We will also be playing a song from this group that we have recorded. Script Writers: The script will be written collaboratively – and all the members of the team will be involved.

Multi Platform Distribution “Virgin Media 100Mb Broadband Service Now Available To One Million UK Homes” (IT Pro Portal, Online, 2011) Connecting with our audience beyond the Radio Show Website integration – Twitter/Facebook/etc. Group/Event Pages created for our Live Show Downloads for iPods/Phones etc. A full Podcast will be available to Download Our own website –
