GPS-DVI Global Positioning System - Device for the Visually Impaired
Overview Project Overview Last Semester Achievements –Campus Map –Integer-to-speech function –Distance in Feet –Path Recalculation –Human Subjects Testing Team Transition Meeting with the project partner
Project Overview Objective: To design and implement a portable device that will enable students who are visually impaired to navigate around campus with the use of the global positioning system. Solution: Program – “PUGuide” –Integrates GPS receiver and PDA to help user navigate around campus using voice output.
GPS-DVI System GUI
Updated Campus Map
Integer-to-speech function Function was created to convert integer values to voice output Allows simple speech of any number Used in many areas throughout program –Confirmation of user button presses –Speaking calculated distance from next node and destination
Distance in Feet Tells user how far she is from destination/next node on button press Accounts for curvature of the Earth –Important as campus coverage expands Allows user to choose their own path if familiar with campus
Path Recalculation Allows user flexibility if obstruction exists in calculated path Strongly desired by project partner Allows for simple implementation of automatic/manual path recalculation
Human Subjects Testing Could not be completed because of certification requirements User testing will improve overall product functionality and provide first-hand feedback
Team Transition New members: - Rohit Vankipuram - Jay Gengelbach - Jonathan Timura Members have read through old design note-books to update themselves on the current status of the project. Old members like Saad Sami.
Meeting with project partner First meeting last week Key components: -Team required to prepare questionnaire -Need a more efficient method to ask user to input code -Program with reference to what node the student is close to

Phase of the Design Process We are currently in the production phase - Software is optimized, kiosk needs minor modification, delivery imminent Project costs: $50 –802.11b USB adapter for kiosk computer
Semester Goals Prepare kiosk for use and place in MSEE Collect feedback Improve and maintain system Deliver Project Create node database software
Kiosk Alterations Installation of 2 brackets –One on the bottom to hold the monitor at the correct level –One at the top of the monitor to secure it in place –Screw holes already in place –No physical alterations to outside of kiosk
Node Database Software Facilitate the creation of a node database with a simple and easy to use GUI Can be used for GPS-DVI and other applications Will utilize Qt and Qt Designer
This Semester So Far Received all confirmations and approvals for kiosk placement Met with Project Partner to inform him of our plans for this semester Planned necessary alterations to kiosk Created rough layout of node software front end

Agenda List of Accomplishments in Fall 2004 Design Parameters Plans for this semester
Past Accomplishments New project was established Problem defined, design parameters set Concepts designed. Completed code for controlled mechanism. Prototype was created.
Current Prototype
Design Parameters Cost less than $500 Requires very little muscle force by user Hold at least 8 – 10 books Makes use of current dorm shelving unit All books are attainable from a seated position
Semester Plans Reconsider concept from past semester –Cost analysis (must be under $500 per shelf) –Practicality: Is an easier solution achievable? Construct several other concepts Decision Matrix: make 1 st and 2 nd choices Create mathematical models, 3-d models List materials and complete cost analysis
