Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 LCLS Control System Organization & Integration with the rest of the lab, Accelerator Operations and Accelerator controls. Hamid Shoaee Outline Lehman Review Control system Resource Requirements Integration with the lab Engineering teams

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 Controls Status Following the Lehman Review A concern was expressed by the Lehman committee regarding the availability of the control system for injector commissioning in December Some specific issues… Lagging procurement, indicating slow progress in a number of areas, threatening injector commissioning Some activities such as cable plant design were as much as 6 months behind the schedule

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 Control System Integration Some specific issues… While LCLS has an excellent Controls team in place, there was insufficient involvement of experienced SLAC engineering and technical staff Lack of sufficient technical expertise in a number of areas, particularly in electronics hardware engineering Lack of sufficient personnel to complete the product lifecycle from production to installation Integration issues, both within controls as well as with other LCLS systems

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 Better use of Lab resources through integration with other Departments/Groups Identified the required expertise to follow through with the control system plans Prepared a list of individuals at SLAC who would be valuable to the LCLS controls effort Reviewed and obtained support and approval from Department heads and the directorate for the integration of the individuals with the project Formed “Engineering Teams” to address integration issues

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 LCLS Engineering Teams The goals for the Engineering Teams are: Multi-disciplinary teams to managing the full product lifecycle from specification and design to engineering development, production, installation and commissioning To ensure communication among all disciplines, and that all interface issues are addressed Each team has representatives from Controls, CPE, Mechanical Systems, Physics, CF, etc. There will be an integrated project meeting for each subsystem with all the relevant disciplines represented

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 LCLS Controls Engineering Teams Charge to each group: Develop a schedule covering all phases leading to installation and commissioning The schedule to include development of appropriate documents (ESD, ICD, etc.) and relevant reviews Interface with Mario Ortega and Bob Fuller to coordinate procurement and installation Produce appropriate Progress reports, Minutes, action items list, etc.

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 Areas of Integration between LCLS & the rest of SLAC Engineering development Production, Installation and commissioning Computing and networking infrastructure (networks, switches, servers, consoles, etc.) Operations Just starting to look at this Control room layout, available spaces, co-existence with PEP-II Operator training

Hamid Shoaee LCLS Control April 20, 2006 Summary – The integration of LCLS with SLAC is off to a good start and needs to continue Control system is better poised for availability for injector commissioning, although challenges exist Practically every level and type of expertise required for the development of control system exists at SLAC and many are being pursued These exist in various “pockets” which could benefit from consolidation and offered to the lab as a service This is particularly crucial as we proceed from the accelerator controls to XES and LUSI
