Critical Reading for College and Beyond CHAPTER NINE

CHAPTER GOALS After learning Chapter 9, you should be able to demonstrate : How to use the PSR technique to better understand your textbooks. How to create and answer preview questions, and judge their effectiveness. How to paraphrase ideas and summarize reading assignments.

What is the PSR system? PSR stands for Preview, Study-Read, Review. Questioning yourself is the most important component of the PSR system. The system establishes a purpose for reading. The system creates a mental framework that holds information in an organized way.

Preview Stage of Reading Allows you to assess how difficult a chapter is. Helps you know how to schedule your time. Encourages you to read actively. The previewing steps are: –Skim the reading. –Develop questions. –Predict content.

Study-Read Stage of Reading Study-reading means asking and answering the questions developed in the preview stage. The study-read steps are: –Read and ask questions. –Understand sections. –Monitor your reading. –Determine the main ideas.

Review Stage of Reading Ask yourself questions in order to understand what you have read in relation to what you already know. Steps in Review Stage are: –A–Assess understanding. –C–Clarify confusing parts.

PSR Allows you to prepare for your reading. Allows you to check your understanding. Allows you to clarify confusing parts.
