Project Objectives To design a monitoring system to record data from the wind turbine and use this data to improve on the power generation. Design and build a foundation to raise the height of the turbine over any further obstacles and bring it closer to the recommended height. Use the monitoring system to observe vibrations transmitted by the turbine into the roof slab. Design the foundation in response to vibrations analysis Analyze the data to study trends of a wind turbine in an urban environment

Background Previous design group placed Whisper 200 on Babbio roof They incorrectly assumed wind readings from buoy on Hudson river and other local weather stations were similar to Babbio roof conditions Local wind measurements were needed of potential locations on campus for the Whisper 200

Background A repeatable experiment was executed at 8 locations on Stevens Campus Measured wind speeds and direction. Repeated on three different days Sample was taken at Babbio Location A (original location) on Day 1 between 1:35pm and 1:45pm.

Background Sample was taken at CPA Location B (optimal location) on Day 1 between 3:00pm and 3:10pm. Average Wind Velocity was measured to be m/s. Wind Direction was conclusively consistent. After analysis, this location was chosen as the most optimal for the Whisper 200, due to its constant wind direction and reliable wind velocity.

Background Whisper 200 moved to CPA location B

Power Transformation System Current system Whisper Link – Rectifies the 3 phase AC out of the turbine and supplies the inverter with a DC output voltage. Windy Boy Inverter converts DC input into single phase 120V/60Hz AC into the electrical grid

Windy Boy Grid Tie Inverter Power Curve Operation Turbine mode of operation draws power based upon the DC voltage seen at the input terminal. Maximum power output 1800W When start voltage is reached, the inverter waits 10 seconds If voltage remains above start point, inverter will synchronize the power and export it. If voltage drops below set point, inverter will have a zero power output for 120 seconds before shutting down.

Issue with Inverter Voltage start point set by manufacturer = 190Vdc Currently the wind turbine needs an increase in the amount of wind speed in order to reach this point.

Inverter Solution Inverter can be adjusted with software provided by manufacturer and purchased connecter cable. Software allows for adjustments to the slope of the power curve Able to reprogram voltage start and max point in range of 155 – 375 Vdc By reducing start and max point, you reduce the maximum power output

Possible extensions Storage Battery system When output DC voltage does not reach inverter start point and during periods of low wind, discharge minor generated voltage into batteries Batteries charge to capacity then discharge into the inverter Downsides Logistics Cost Voltage losses

Possible Extensions Minor battery system Install 2-3 batteries Store energy when Vdc start point is not met Use stored power in batteries to boost the input DC voltage past the start point when it is close Downsides Cost Logistics Feasibility
