1 What is it? EPICS Engineering Projects in Community Service Community service needs people with strong technical backgrounds Engineering students need more than strong technical skills to succeed Initialized in Purdue University SJSU EPICS started in Spring 2004!

2 Sample EPICS Projects Design and develop an environmental monitoring system to help the museum keep track of temperature and humidity in an effort to better preserve their collections. Design and develop interactive displays and activities for patrons of the museum of all ages. Design a multimedia learning center, including exhibits, kiosk, interactive computer programs, and sound systems, for the Columbian Park Zoo.

3 Sample EPICS Projects Develop mechanical and electromechanical toys and play environments for children with physical disabilities. Design and develop a mobile computer lab so a technological learning atmosphere can be experienced anywhere.

4 SJSU EPICS: Media Streaming Media Streaming Project Senior citizens, immigrants and many others want to share their success stories, life experience with friends, family members all over the world Advances in digital media and broadband technology make it possible for people to share life stories online durability accessibility

5 Project Tasks record interview sessions of life stories compress interview videos using various media coders so that the coded video can be viewed from various types of network links, from dial-up modem to T1 connections evaluate different server technology and identify the best one for streaming using ConferenceXP APIs to translate stories into EnglishConferenceXP
