EDGE™ Project Overview Presentation P Automation/Improvement of Wegmans Cookie Line Packaging Project Team: Stephanie Rager (IE), Bruno Coelho (ME), Mark Voss (ME), Chukwuma Morah (IE), Brian Duffy (EE), Benjamin Powell (EE)
EDGE™ Project Overview Mission Statement: The mission of this project is to create an automated prototype that will separate mini cookies by weight, while preventing cookies from moving on in the process until a specified weight is reached. It will create a clear separation between the sets of cookies that go into each package without substantially slowing down the packaging process. Project Description: Wegmans bakes and packages all of their mini cookies at their bakeshop located here in Rochester on Brookes Avenue. Currently the packaging is done by six or seven people who stand around a conveyor and pull the cookies into the clam-shell packages. This leads to the problem of packing more cookies than needed into a package. The mini-cookie package calls for 398 grams worth of cookies but employees sometimes package up to 450 grams. This is a loss for Wegmans because customers are receiving more cookies than they are paying for. This project will look into building an automated prototype that will separate the cookies into the correct amount by weight, which the employees can then package.
EDGE™ Key Challenges/Risks Description of RiskPossible Consequences Probability (H/M/L) Severity (H/M/L) Overall (H/M/L) Contingency Plan Insufficient Funds- Wegmans doesn't have the funds to support project Unable to proceed with implementation/creation of final prototype MHM/H Develop a cost-effective prototype, thoroughly discuss budget and project with Wegmans Substantially slows down process It would not make sense to implement final prototype LHM Perform proper analysis and adjustments of prototype to ensure this is not a problem Technology- needed technology to create prototype is not available Unable to create an effective final prototype that performs necessary goals MHM/H Perform proper research to ensure that the needed technology is available Reduces quality of cookies Design and prototype cannot be implemented LHM Ensure that design will not reduce cookie quality, build in a safe guard to keep cookies from being destroyed Insufficient skillsStudents are unable to perform necessary tasks to complete project LHMEnsure that team members are doing the proper research for their tasks, provide help to other team members, seek out the necessary help
