Madre de Cacao as Biopesticide Against Chicken lice A Science Investigatory Project Research Proposal

Introduction According to the Bureau of Agriculture, in the Philippines chicken is the most in demand poultry meat. Raising chicken has been a source of livelihood especially in rural areas but its problems include the prevalence of many destructive poultry diseases and parasites cannot be ignored.

This study aims to discover an organic treatment to eradicate the problem of parasites specifically chicken louse ( Menopon gallinae) which is one of the most common external parasites among chickens. The locally available plant, Madre de Cacao (Gliricidia sepium), which contains poisonous substances will be used by the researcher to determine its effectiveness as pesticide to chicken lice.

Problem This study aims to: determine the effectiveness of Madre de Cacao bark extract as pesticide to chicken louse; and Determine the best concentration of Madre de Cacao bark extract in the mortality rate of chicken louse

Hypothesis Madre de Cacao bark extract may be used as organic pesticide to chicken louse.

Materials and Methods A. Materials Madre de Cacao bark powder – 600 grams Petri dish – 3 pieces Distilled water- 30 mL Blender Chicken lice Spray bottles

b. Methods I. Identification and Authentication of Chicken louse Chicken louse will be verified by a scientist. II. Procedure 1. Chicken lice samples will be collected and segregated into petri dishes in three (3) set-ups with 10 lice each, namely set-ups 1, 2, and 3. 2. Madre de Cacao bark will be collected and blended with distilled water. The following different concentrations will be put into spray bottles: Concentration Treatment Level 100 g of Madre de Cacao bark powder, 10 mL distilled water T1 200 g of Madre de Cacao bark powder, 10 mL distilled water T2 300 g of Madre de Cacao bark powder, 10 mL distilled water T3

3. Set-ups 1,2, and 3 will be treated with T1, T2, and T3 respectively through direct spraying. 4. Observations will be done on the mortality rate of Chicken lice.

Budget 10-pc Chicken lice – P 10.00 10 mL Distilled water - P 2.00 TOTAL - P12.00
