This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No Antonia Morales Perez (Cefic), Thomas Track (DECHEMA) Eco-efficient management of water in European Chemical Industry: E4Water SPIRE PPP Impact workshop Brussels, April 2015

The rationale of E4Water Chemical Industry provides the highest potential for increasing eco- efficiency in industrial water management. Chemical process industry is water user and solution provider for key strategic European process industry sectors such as mining, industrial biotechnology, health, food, electronic, pulp and paper, and energy. E4Water addresses crucial process industry needs, to overcome bottlenecks and barriers for an integrated, cost and energy efficient water management. April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop

Aim/ Challenges (I) AIM: Develop, implement and validate new integrated approaches for a more efficient and sustainable management of water in Chemical Industry achieving solutions that are eco-efficient:  >-20% water use,  >-30% wastewater production,  > -15% energy consumption),  cost-effective (up to > 20% cost reduction) and  industrially relevant. April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop

Aim/ Challenges (II)  Creating water loop interfaces and synergies: (I) in industry (II) with urban & agricultural water management  Overcome the bottleneck in recycling and reuse: Treating concentrates/complex wastewaters  Linking water- and production processes for process efficiency optimization April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop

The standard approach April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop Netherlands: Mild desalination, alternative water sources Belgium: multi- company site, Identification of Synergies Spain: water loop closure, ensure process continuation Italy/ Czech Republic: in- process water loop closure, new technology trains France: Integrated water management at a petrochemical site Denmark: Industrial Symbiosis, new technologies for an integrated water management system Project 1 Project 2 Project 3 Project 4 Project 5 Project 6

The distinctive approach April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop Netherlands: Mild desalination, alternative water sources CS 1 Belgium: multi- company site, Identification of Synergies CS 2 Spain: water loop closure, ensure process continuation CS 3 Italy/ Czech Republic: in- process water loop closure, new technology trains CS 4 France: Integrated water management at a petrochemical site CS 5 Denmark: Industrial Symbiosis, new technologies for an integrated water management system CS 6

E4Water Case Studies (CS) April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop CS4: Italy/ Czech Republic: in-process water loop closure, new technology trains CS1: Netherlands: Mild desalination, alternative water sources CS2: Belgium: multi-company site, Identification of Synergies CS5: France: Integrated water management at a petrochemical site CS3: Spain: water loop closure, ensure process continuation CS6: Denmark: Industrial Symbiosis, new technologies for an integrated water management system Water use ↓ Waste water production ↓ Energy use ↓ Economical efficiency ↑

Technological current and expected impacts current: reduction of: up to ~ 45% in water use up to ~ 65% in wastewater production April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop expected: reduction of > 20% in water use reduction of > 30% in wastewater production more than double  use of alternative water resources,  reuse of water,  water loop closure,  industrial symbiosis,  on site integrated water management

Economic/Social current and expected impacts expected: significant direct economic benefit decreased dependency from fresh water resources current: significant direct economic benefit up to ~ 30% April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop

expected: 15% reduction in energy use current: ~ 15% reduction in energy use April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop Environmental current and expected impacts

Future…  Intensified cooperation between water treatment and production processes development/ optimization for an improved overall production efficiency  From zero liquid discharge/ water loop closure towards an intelligent integrated industrial water management  as element of a (trans)industrial symbiosis April 22, 2015 – SPIRE PPP Impact Workshop  CEN workshop  Training:  Internal: Consortium Companies  External: Chemical Companies or other sectors interested in learning/applying these solutions
