What type of Science courses are available year 11? ATAR Courses: Examinable courses, which may be used towards a university entrance score. ATAR Courses: Examinable courses, which may be used towards a university entrance score. General Courses: TAFE, traineeships, apprenticeships and employment pathway. Organisation of Courses Each course has 4 units. Each course has 4 units.  Units 1 and 2 are taken in year 11.  Units 3 and 4 are taken in year 12. The WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examination for ATAR courses is based only on units 3 and 4. The WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education) examination for ATAR courses is based only on units 3 and 4.

Year 11 General Courses Integrated Science: Integrated Science: is a course grounded in the belief that science is a practical activity. Integrated Science encourages students to be questioning, reflective and critical thinkers about scientific issues. This course is based on a holistic view of science knowledge and starts with the problems and issues that are important to young people. It draws on the traditional disciplines of science, such as biology, chemistry, geology and physics, as well as less traditional areas, such as forensic science and biotechnology. Integrated Science enables students to investigate issues that are interesting and relevant in a modern world.

Year 11 General Courses Earth & Environmental Science Earth & Environmental Science The Earth and Environmental Science course encourages students to be curious about the world around them and apply scientific principles to develop an understanding of their Earth and environment. They learn about relationships between Earth’s materials and the geological processes that formed them. This knowledge is critical for finding solutions to environmental challenges and making informed decisions about managing our Earth and environment in a sustainable and responsible way. Year 11 General Courses  Integrated Science is a course for students who wish to study Science to prepare for employment or further training (such as TAFE, apprenticeships or traineeships).  Earth & environmental Science is relevant to students who may be considering a career in mining or environmental areas such as land care, conservation and resource industries

Year 11 ATAR Courses Chemistry Chemistry is the study of materials and the transformations they undergo. Chemistry enables students to appreciate the natural and built environment, its materials and the interactions between them. Some of the major challenges and opportunities facing Australia and the Asia-Pacific region are associated with chemistry. Issues of sustainability are tackled by the application of chemical knowledge using a range of technologies. These include issues such as the supply of clean drinking water, efficient production and use of energy, management of mineral resources, increasing acidification of the oceans, and climate change. is the study of materials and the transformations they undergo. Year 11 ATAR Courses Human Biology Human Biology covers a wide range of ideas relating to the functioning human. Students learn about themselves and how humans survive in a changing environment. They will learn how their body works, why there are differences between human beings and how our species has evolved. They will study how the human genome project has allowed advances in biotechnology, disease detection and treatment. covers a wide range of ideas relating to the functioning human. Physics. Physics. is a fundamental science that endeavours to explain all the natural phenomena that occur in the universe. Physics has helped to unlock the mysteries of the universe and provides the foundation of under- standing upon which modern technologies and all other sciences are based. is a fundamental science that endeavours to explain all the natural phenomena that occur in the universe. In the Physics course, students investigate the natural and built world around them in a wide and interesting range of contexts. They explore the different forms of energy and how forces can alter the environment. They learn how electric and magnetic fields can be used in machines and electronic devices, why different materials are used in heating and cooling systems, how communication and vision systems apply our understanding of the properties of light and sound waves and how radioactivity is used in industrial testing and in the treatment of diseases.

Which course is right for you? Talk to your teacher; they know your ability in Science and are able to recommend a course that you will find challenging but are capable of succeeding in. If you are in a stage 2 pathway class, you can confidently choose from any ATAR Science that you achieve an A or B grade in. Students who gain a C grade need to consider whether they can increase their effort in Year 11 to meet the demands of ATAR courses. Stage two classes are: Set 10SCI.1 Mrs Dixon/Sharma Set 10SCI.2 Mrs Dixon/Sharma Set 10SCI.5 Mrs Sharma If you are in a stage 1 pathway class, you can choose from Integrated Science & Earth and Environmental Science. If you achieve an A, B or C grade. Students achieving lower grades are unlikely to be successful in a year 11 Science course. Stage one classes are: Set 10SCI.3 Mrs Lister Set 10SCI.4 Mr Hambleton Set 10SCI.6 Mrs Bacon Set 10SCI.7 Mr Hambleton Set 10SCI.8 Mrs King/Ms Wallace
