So what’s the difference?

Use the acronym T.O.P.I.C to remember ser

Using Ser T: Use SER to indicate TIME (and dates). Es la una y cuarto= It’s 1:15 Using Ser

O: Use SER to indicate ORIGIN: where someone or something is from. SOY de Quito = I’m from Quito (Ecuador). Using Ser

Using Ser P: SER is also used to indicate PROFESSION La Señorita Heller ES maestra = Ms. Heller is a teacher. Using Ser

I: Use SER to IDENTIFY a person by describing what they look like. Tú eres pellirojo= You are redheaded Using Ser

C: Use SER to dsecribe the characteristics of someone’s personality. Los estudiantes SON inteligentes = The students are intelligent. Using Ser

Use ESTAR to indicate LOCATION: where someone or something is. Quito ESTÁ en Ecuador = Quito is in Ecuador. Using Estar

ESTAR is also used to DESCRIBE CONDITIONS, such as how someone feels.  Physical. ¿Cómo ESTÁS? = How are you? (tired, etc.)  Emotional. ESTAMOS contentos = We are happy Using Estar
