LOS PRONOMBRES: LO, LA, LOS, LAS Capítulo 7

Recuerdan: There are two types of object pronouns (pronouns in English found after the verb). The object pronouns have NOTHING TO DO WITH THE SUBJECT OR VERB ENDING in Spanish. Direct object pronouns refer to people/things that are receiving the action. The direct object can either be a noun or pronoun. Indirect object pronouns refer TO WHOM or FOR WHOM an action is performed.

Me, te, and nos are object pronouns Me, te, and nos can be used as either direct or indirect object pronouns. Me corresponds to mí (predicate of yo) Te corresponds to ti (predicate of tú) Nos corresponds to nosotros However, unlike in English, D.O.P.s and I.O.P.s are placed before a conjugated verb. El médico me ve. Me examina. ¿Te habla el médico? Sí, me habla. El médico nos examina y nos da una receta.

Le and Les are only indirect object pronouns. Le and Les are both masculine and feminine. Le corresponds to a él, a ella, and a usted. Les corresponds to a ellos, a ellas and a ustedes. La médica le da una receta. La médica les habla. To clarify, le and les are often used with another phrase repeating (but not translating) to whom they refer.

I.O.P.s SingularPlural Me (to/for) meNos (to/for) us Te (to/for) you (informal) Os (to/for) you (pl, inf, Spain) Le (to/for) him, her, you (formal) Les (to/for) them, you (plural)

Lo, la, los and las are direct object pronouns. These D.O.P.s must agree with the noun it replaces.

D.O.P.s SingularPlural me “me”nos “us” te “you informal”os lo “him, it, you form” la “her, it, you form” los“them mas, you pl” las “them fem, you pl”

Ella compró el casco. Compró los guantes. ¿Miró Juan la pelota? ¿Miró las raquetas? ¿Invitaste a Juan? ¿Invitaste a María? ¿Invitaste a sus amigos? Ella lo compró. Los compró. Sí, la miró. Sí, las miró. Sí, lo invité. Sí, la invité. Sí, los invité.
