EPSIAE 2013 WELCOME TO BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY Thank you all very much for coming along. I’d like to take about 30 minutes of your time to tell you about Birmingham City University, and what makes us unique. I hope I can inspire you to make Birmingham City University your ‘firm choice’ in your application. And, hopefully, we’ll be welcoming you here next year! Professor Mel Lees Executive Dean Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment

168 YEARS OF HISTORY The Faculty of Technology, Engineering 1971: The City of Birmingham Polytechnic is created through the merger of five colleges: Birmingham College of Art - formed in 1843 Birmingham School of Music – dating from 1959 Birmingham School of Commerce – formed in the early 20th Century South Birmingham Technical College – established 1961 North Birmingham Technical College – created in 1966 1992: The Polytechnic becomes the University of Central England in Birmingham 2007: The University changes its name to ‘Birmingham City University’ The College of Art, the School of Music and several other institutions joined together to become ‘The City of Birmingham Polytechnic’ in 1971. This new name was approved by then Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher. In 1992, the Further and Higher Education Act gave all polytechnics the power to adopt the title 'university'. The new name, 'University of Central England in Birmingham', was approved by the Privy Council. In 2007, the University changed its name to ‘Birmingham City University’ and developed a new logo - a reworking of the old tiger crest. This logo was first used by the Birmingham College of Commerce, one of the Polytechnic's founder institutions. We chose the name to reflect our pride in our city and our heritage.
