De + Definite Articles (Le, la, les, l’)

The preposition de (of, from) contracts with the definite articles le and les. De + l’article défini (le, la, les,l’) de + le du de + les des Exemple: Je viens du café. I’m coming from the café. C’est l’anniversaire du prof de science.It’s the Science teacher’s birthday.

There is NO contraction with l’ and la. Exemple: → C’est l’anniversaire de la prof d’anglais. It’s the English teacher’s birthday. → C’est le premier mois de l’année. It’s the first month of the year

To say where someone comes from, use a form of Venir followed by: De or d’ → if the place is a city. Ex: Je viens de Paris. Albert vient de Cleveland De or d’ → if the country is feminine. Ex: Il vient de France Du → if the country is masculine Ex: Je viens du Canada Des→ if the country is plural Ex: Nous venons des Etats-Unis.
