Por and Para The prepositions por and para have similar meanings but different uses in Spanish. Uses for Por: -Duration of Time -Exchange/ Price -Movement Through -Made by../By means of -Cause, Reason, Motive Uses for Para -Opinion -Recipient -Deadline -In order to… -Employer -Destination

Por : Duration of Time Is used to tell for how long something has been going on. Also means in the morning, in the noon, or in the night. (Por la mañana, por la tarde, or por la noche) Example: Yo juego el fútbol por diez años. - I have been playing soccer for 10 years. Por la tarde, yo practico el tenis. - In the afternoon, I practice tennis.

Por: Exchange/Price Is used to say how much something is or how much you bought something for. Example: Marisol compra el vestido por viente dolares. - Marisol bought the dress for 20 dollars.

Por : Movement Through Is used to say movement through or along an area. Example: Carlos camina por el parque. - Carlos walks through the park.

Por: Made by…; by means of... Is used to say either by means of communication or transportation. Example: Yo voy a Mexíco por el avión. -I go to Mexico by plane. Te llamo por teléfono. - I’ll call you by phone.

Por: Cause, Reason, or Motive Is used to say “because of” something. It can show the reason for an errand.(ir, venir, pasar, mandar, volver, and preguntar) Also, you can use it to say thank you for something. Example: Por eso, ella escribió el artículo. - For that reason, she wrote the article. Gracias por el regalo. - Thanks for the gift.

Para: Opinion Is used when you state a personal opinion. “Para mí…” Example: Para mí, leer es mejor que escribir. - To me, reading is better than writing.

Para: Recipient Is used to indicate the recipient of an action or object. - For you, for her/him, for them(para ti, para ella/el, para ellos/ellas) Example: Este libro es para mi madre - This book is for my mother.

Para: Deadline Is used to indicate a deadline to meet. -…by Monday, …by 6 o’clock, …by tomorrow, etc.. Example: Escribe el ensayo para el viernes. - Write the essay by Friday.

Para: In Order to… Is used for goals or purposes. -(para + infinitive) Example: Yo estudio mucho para sacar buenas notas. - I study a lot in order to get good grades.

Para :Employer Is used to indicate a job or employer. Example: Teresa trabaja para el periódico. -Teresa works for the newspaper.

Para: Destination Is used to indicate movement towards a place. Example: Aaron salió para el partido de básquetbol a las tres. - Aaron left for the basketball game at three.
