1. Any questions about the homework for today? 2. Go over the voice recording assignment for tomorrow (Saturday) 3. Talk about question words 4. Learn how to conjugate estar and when to use it 5. Talk about the homework

 If you feel like it’s marking answers wrong, but you know they’re right…  come talk to me ! You’re probably just switching two letters or missing one accent mark. Talk to me about it.  The homework is meant to give you an opportunity to practice your new knowledge… not to sabotage your grade!  Be sure to attempt your homework a few days before it’s due… if you have technical difficulties, me and we can try to work around it!

-o-amos -as-áis -a-an -o-emos -es-éis -e-en -o-imos -es-ís -e-en -AR -ER-IR  We know how to conjugate ALL regular verbs!!!!  All infinitives in Spanish will end in –AR, -ER, or –IR  So, as long as the conjugation is regular, you can conjugate ANY REGULAR VERB !!  To broaden your vocabulary (and to double check the conjugation), visit

 llegar = to arrive  participar = to participate  deber + (infinitive) = to should (do something)  The first two are conjugated like regular –AR verbs  The last verb phrase is conjugated like a regular –ER verb

 Use “deber” + the infinitive of another verb to express what someone should or ought to do › Debo hacer la tarea = I should do the homework › Debes trabajar = You should work › Ella debe leer = She should read › Debemos bailar = We should dance › Ustedes deben participar = Y’all should participate  deber conjugates like a regular –ER verb

1. Who should do the thing? › Conjugate the verb in the form of the person that should do the thing!  YOU should study  Tú debes estudiar  I should drink coffee.  Yo debo beber café.  We should speak Spanish  Nosotros debemos hablar española

 You already know a lot of question words! They are on your Spanish Survival Sheet

 To ask how much one thing costs, use ¿cuanto cuesta ______?  To ask how much more than one thing costs, use ¿cuanto cuestan ______?  To reply, use cuesta _____ dólares/pesos/etc.  Or, for more than one thing cuestan _____ dólares/pesos/etc.

 el gato?  la mesa?  las sillas? cuesta… cuestan… $54 $13 $37

 Look at Activity 1-29  Read the six pieces of information given to you.  On your own, write questions that you would ask to find out that information.  When you’re done, find a partner and interview them!  Take notes, be prepared to share with the class!

 Hacer  Saber  Ver  Everything else is normal (as in, conjugated like regular –ER verbs)  Only the first person singular (yo form) is weird!  These are SUPER COMMON verbs that you will use a lot

hago hac emos hac es hac éis hac e hac en

sé sab emos sab es sab éis sab e sab en

veo v emos v es v éis veveven

= est oy est amos est ás est áis est á est án I amwe are you areyou all are he/she/Usted isthey/Ustedes are  Estar ends in –AR, but unfortunately it is not regular. It is irregular.  The only weird form is the “yo” form.  The “tú” “él/ella/Ud.” and “ellos/ellas/Ustedes form get accent marks

 Isn’t there another way to say “is”? › Like when describing personality?  Homer Simpson es cómico. › When telling someone where you’re from?  ¿De donde eres? Soy de Chicago. › Telling time?  Son las dos menos diez. Es la una. › Talking about profession?  Él es estudiante. Nosotros somos estudiantes.

 Yup, that’s right. To say “to be” are two different verbs in Spanish.  They are ser and estar.  Let’s see how to conjugate them before we learn when to use them… estar = to be est oy est amos est ás est áis est á est án ser = to be soysomos eressois esson * every form of ser is irregular

 All you need to know is this little rhyme:  If you plan to continue to study Spanish, I’ve included more detailed rules for ser vs. estar on your worksheet.  THAT WORKSHEET INCLUDES VERB CONSTRUCTIONS YOU ARE UNFAMILLIAR WITH. DO NOT WORRY. I WILL NOT TEST YOU ON THEM. How you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar

1. Buenos días, Clara. ¿Como ______ (tú)? 2. No tengo noventa y dos gatos. Por eso (therefore), yo _______ mal. 3. ¿Noventa y dos? ¿Dónde ______ tu (your) gato? 4. Mi (my) gato _______ debajo de la mesa. 5. Um… ¿Por qué? 6. Porque ________ lloviendo!

7. ¿Como ____ tu (your) gato? 8. Mi (my) gato _____ inteligente y activo. 9. ¿Que hora ____? Tengo clase a las ______ la una y media. ¿Que clase tienes (do you have)? 11. Tengo (I have) la clase de psicología. ____ muy fácil. 12. Bueno. Pues (well), ¡hasta luego! 13. ¡Hasta luego!

 Review everything we’ve learned these past four weeks.  If you are unsure about things or have questions, please me by Saturday at midnight so I can prepare worksheets/activities about that concept  Or, just ask me in class on Monday

 sábado (2/7) › 1 item due. A voice recording about question words.  lunes (2/9) › 4 items due. About cultural concepts: Spain.  miércoles (2/11) › 5 items due. Watch a video clip and complete related activities.  Have a great weekend!!!!!
