Presentation transcript:

Quasimodo: Get out the work you did with Direct Objects on Friday. Read through your notes/comments and get ready to take some notes!

What is a direct object? The object or person who the action is done to. It is the direct recipient of the action. Answers “What?” and “Whom?” Example: I buy the ball. I buy what? The ball – the ball is the D.O. They hugged Alicia. They hugged whom? Alicia – Alicia is the D.O.

Son las tres… In the examples section: Underline the subject 1 time. Underline the verb 2 times. Circle the direct object.

Personal “a” In Spanish, if the Direct Object in a sentence is a person they put an “a” in front of their name. Examples: Yo abrazo (hug) a la niña. Ellos conocen (know) al maestro. Él golpea (hits) a Michael. This doesn’t have a translation into English, it is just something you need to do.

What is a pronoun? Replaces a noun. We already know our subject pronouns… YoNosotros TúVosotros Él/Ella/UstedEllos/Ellas/Ustedes

What is a direct object pronoun? Instead of saying the direct object, you replace it with a direct object pronoun (DOP) Examples: I buy the ball.  I buy it. They hugged Alicia  They hugged her.

DOP in Spanish Me (me)Nos (us) Te (you s. inf.)Os (y’all) Lo/la (you s. formal)Los/las (you all formal) Lo/la (it/him/her)Los/las (them)

Objetos objetivos en español.

Examples in Spanish: Mi esposo abraza a mí Mi novio me abraza.

Examples in Spanish: Ella hace las maletas. Ella las hace.

Examples in Spanish: El gato está abrazando el pato. El gato lo está abrazando. OR El gato está abrazándolo.

Caleb está bebiendo chocolate caliente. Caleb lo está bebiendo. OR Caleb está bebiéndolo.

In English… The DOP just replaces the noun and stays in the same place. I buy the hat.  I buy it. This order doesn’t work in Spanish so you CANNOT just direct translate the sentence.

FORMAT: 1 verb Affirmative sentences: Drop the direct object. Place the direct object pronoun in front of the conjugated verb. Example: Yo lo compro. (I buy it.) Negative sentences: Drop the direct object. Place the direct object pronoun after the “no” and in front of the conjugated verb. Example: Yo no lo compro. (I don’t buy it)

2 verbs working together: 2 verbs working together Could be Present progressive or infinitive construction (ir+a+infinitive, querer+infinitive, etc.) Drop the direct object. Place the direct object pronoun in front of the conjugated verb Examples: Yo lo estoy comprando. (I am buying it) Yo lo quiero comprar. (I want to buy it)

or with 2 verbs you can… Drop the direct object. Stick the direct object pronoun to the end of the present participle or infinitive verb. NOTE: If you stick it to the PP you need to add an accent on the “e” of –iendo or the “a” of –ando Examples: Yo estoy comprándolo. (I am buying it) Yo quiero comprarlo. (I want to buy it)
