The Irregular Preterite

There are many irregular verbs in the preterite tense you must memorize! All verbs that end in -car, -gar, and –zar have an irregular “yo” form! -car c  qu -garg  gu -zarz  c

These are only “-ar” ending verbs. Preterite “-ar”endings are: -é -amos -aste -ó -aron

Verbs that end in -car follow this pattern: atacar – to attack ataqué atacamos atacaste atacó atacaron

Verbs Ending in -car buscar – to look for pescar – to fish tocar – to play/touch explicar – to explain sacar – to take out atacar – to attack

Verbs that end in -gar follow this pattern: llegar – to arrive llegué llegamos llegaste llegó llegaron

Verbs Ending in -gar pagar – to pay jugar – to play (sport/game) llegar – to arrive entregar – to hand in pegar – to hit negar – to deny rogar – to beg

Verbs that end in –zar follow this pattern: comenzar – to begin comencé comenzamos comenzaste comenzó comenzaron

Verbs Ending in -zar abrazar – to hug almorzar – to eat lunch rezar – to pray comenzar – to begin/start empezar – to begin/start cruzar – to cross

There are some stem changers in the preterite tense with these rules: 1.Only –ir verbs make a change 2.Make a different type of change: normal changenew change e  ie e  i o  ue o  u e  i e  i 3. Only change the forms in the bottom (sole) of the shoe!
