Reported Speech To tell what someone else said

In English To report what someone said, you can use the simple past tense, the past progressive tense, or the conditional tense. Nico said that he went to the movies Nico said that he was going to the movies Nico said that he would go to the movies.

In Spanish A variety of tenses can be used for reported speech as well. Use the preterite to report what people said they did Use the imperfect to report what people said were planning to do Use the conditional to report what people said they would do in the future.

Use the preterite To report what someone said they did. Nico said that he went to the theater Nico dijo que fue al teatro.
