Poetic Photo Book Fundraiser MEMBERS of HOPE IN LIFE

Poetic Photo Book Fundraiser George Karla Angelica Walter Joanna Abraham At our very first meeting, the students knew pretty early, that they wanted to give back to someone less fortunate. Plans were made to create a poetry book with photos about poverty. It was the students’ mission to create and give back. The students have studied photography and poetry. They’ve learned that photos can convey meaning and spark an array of emotions. They’ve also gained an understanding of the significance of poetry and how poems are an important part of our lives. Through photography and poetry our students have become “poetic photojournalists”. Through this experience the students wanted to make people more aware of poverty in our communities. They have written several poems and have taken several photos to bring awareness to this problem and hope our communities will do a better job to give. Our students have compassionate hearts and have a giving spirit. MEMBERSGOALS

Objectives

Strategies Chalk Talks – students are shown a prompt about a previous lesson regarding poetry and photography; students (about three at a time) come to the board and write a response. Realia – provide several photos from the internet to share with students. Provide several poems that show “meaning” and read aloud to students.

Key Vocabulary Meaning Curious Imaginary Desire Characteristics Introspective Reflection  Vocabulary development is critical for the English learner. Vocabulary words were an important part of our lesson planning.  We discussed and defined each word before an activity. The students wrote their weekly words in their journals.  We used colorful sentence strips and posted words on our display board and on the white board in front of the classroom.

MaterialsMotivation  Several Poems  Internet photos  Paper  Pens/Pencils  Display Board  Vocabulary List  Sentence Strips  Display Board Decorated  Discuss new vocabulary list  Be enthusiastic when presenting lesson!

Presentation  Review last week’s vocabulary words.  Read list of new vocabulary words aloud and have student’s repeat. Go over definition and provide an example. Post sentence strips on board.  Teacher will read several poems aloud to students that show “meaning” and discuss.

Practice/Application  To further gain an understanding of how words convey meaning, students will complete a “meaning” worksheet about themselves.  Students will use answers from worksheet to help them create an “I Am” poem.

Review and Assessment  Walk around room to view student work to assess comprehension.  Students will share “I Am” poems with class.  Students are given time at the end of class to share ideas and write in their journals.
