LARGE SCALE PROJECT COORDINATION= PARTNERS, TRAINING, TEAMWORK HOPE CREW 1

WHAT IS HOPE CREW? Hands-On-Preservation-Experience (HOPE) Crew is an initiative of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) in partnership with The Corps Network (TCN).  Program Mission: To train thousands of young people in preservation crafts, rehabilitate hundreds of historic sites each year, and open the world of preservation to a new group of young and diverse supporters.  Each HOPE Crew project is a partnership, with NTHP providing preservation expertise, TCN providing and coordinating a network of expert member Corps, a partner (such as a Corps) providing crew participants, and a site-owner providing the historic property in need of preservation.  Youth Corps provide the labor, tools, training, room and board, insurance, and materials. 2

HOPE CREW PROJECT IN ACTION Property Name: Shenandoah National Park Project Name: Skyland Stables Rehabilitation Description: Rehabilitate exterior of stables and construct new perimeter fencing Project Partners: NTHP, TCN, CCCWV, NPS, Delaware North 3

HOW THE PROJECT WORKED  Project identified and approved by the National Park Service  Funded by Delaware North Companies, the NPS concessionaire in Shenandoah  The Corps Network coordinated project logistics with NPS, NTHP, DNC and identified Corps (CCCWV)  The Citizens Conservation Corps of West Virginia provided the Corpsmembers and performed the work  The Trust provided the preservation advisor and carpentry expert 4

STEP 1: DEFINING THE NEED  NPS faces a maintenance backlog of nearly $12 Billion  America’s historic places are deteriorating  The need for individuals trained in historic preservation and technical crafts is at a all time high 5

STEP 2: HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THE NEED? Corps provide:  Skilled Workforce  Technical Assistance  Education Stipend  And much more… 6

STEP 3: WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED TO ADDRESS THE NEED? In our case, we need the expertise in historic preservation by NTHP to help identify potential projects acceptable for youth corps and expand our reach to networks that engage in historic preservation every day. By partnering with NTHP, we can provide crafts experts who directly train Corpsmembers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. By partnering with NTHP, we can connect to a larger network of people and parks that can help identify, provide funding for, and support youth corps work nationwide. 7

STEP 4: HOW THE CORPS NETWORK CAN HELP!  Provides technical assistance  Voice of the national movement  Expertise in partnership building  Success in fundraising and writing grants on behalf of Corps  Promotes members interests 8
