Problem: How can you investigate inheritance patterns in families. Materials: Paper, Pen/Pencil

Joshua and Bella have a son named Ian. Ian has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Joshua and Bella are both healthy Bella’s parents, Bob and Barb, are both healthy. Joshua’s parents, Bill and Mary, are both healthy Joshua’s sister, Sara has cystic fibrosis. Case Study 1 N= dominant normal allele n= recessive allele (cystic fibrosis)

1.Create a pedigree that shows all of the family members. 2.Shade in the circles or squares representing individuals who have cystic fibrosis. 3.Determine the genotype of each family member starting with Ian. Write it next to each person. N= dominant normal allele n= recessive allele (cystic fibrosis)

Case Study 2 The father, Dawine, has a skin condition (purple dots). The mother, Amina, does not. Dawine and Amina’s first child, a girl named Layla, has the same skin condition as Dawine. Amina’s sister, Abeni has the same skin condition, but Amina’s parents do not. Dawine has one brother, Elijah whose skin is normal, and one sister, Quiarrah who has the skin condition. Dawine’s mother has the skin condition. His father does not. H= Healthy skin h=dots

1.Create a pedigree that shows all of the family members. 2.Shade in the circles or squares representing individuals who have the skin condition. 3.Determine the genotype of each family member. H= Healthy skin h=dots

How does this activity relate to the topics that you and your classmates discussed in chapter 4? Why?

Daniel has tongilitis, his wife Semone does not. Daniel’s mother and father, Tyreek and Cheyenne, are both healthy. Daniel’s sister, Danielle, is healthy. Their brother John has tongilitis. Semone’s mother, Daisha, is healthy. Her father Malik has tongilitis. Daniel and Semone have three children. Noelani and Jaisha are both healthy, but Kaseem has tongilitis.
