My name is ATALAYA, which means Watchtower. I am Black/Native American, German, and Irish decent. My diversity is important because many of us in inherit our families diseases. Combined with exercise, Vitamins can help you control your weight and illness. Due to my family’s history of having a poor immune systems, obesity, and blindness, I added foods to my diet which help prevent certain infections. In the past, I never paid attention to what I put inside my body and I didn’t care about how it could affect me or my family later one in life. Disease was the least of my worries until it came so close to home.

Cultural competency is one the main ingredients in closing the disparities gap in health care. It’s the way patients and doctors can come together and talk about health concerns without cultural differences hindering the conversation, but enhancing it. Quite simply, health care services that are respectful of and responsive to the health beliefs, practices and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse patients can help bring about positive health outcomes.

It is also an essential nutrient needed during reproduction, cell growth, and helps supports your immune system Vitamins are either fat soluble or water soluble. The fat- soluble vitamins include A, D, E, and K. They are absorbed by the body using progression that directly corresponds the absorption of fat ( eHow, 2014 ).

The American Journal reports, Vitamin A deficiency is uncommon in the United States, but it is frequent among the deprived in developing countries (AJCN, 2010). Improvements in the vitamin A status of deficient populations can reduce mortality in young children by 23%. Remember children need vitamin A to grow properly, but the older you get, the less vitamin A you will need for the body. Food Sources

Vitamin A deficiency is frequent among the deprived in developing countries. It is associated with increased severity of infection and higher rates of mortality Pregnant women or women, who are planning to get pregnant, should not take in excess of 7,500 IU of vitamin A per day because of the risk of birth defects. The recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A for men over 18 is 900 mcg, and for women it's 700 mcg. (Living strong, 2012). In spite of significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of most chronic diseases, there is evidence that racial and ethnic minorities tend to receive lower quality of care than nonminority and that, patients of minority ethnicity experience greater morbidity and mortality from various chronic diseases than nonminority

Vitamin A helps protect the surface of the eye cornea, it is essential for good vision. Vitamin A, at least when in combination with other antioxidant vitamins, also appears to play a role in decreasing the risk of macular degeneration ( Wood, 2007).

Taking vitamin A daily, should be omitted from people over 65’s diet, because there is a higher chance of fracturing bones once you reach that age group. Also beta-carotene, which has all the chemical relatives of Vitamin A, in some cases, increases the frequency of lung and prostate cancer. Individuals should not consume beta-carotene unless they need it for concern to the sun (Living strong, 2012). Consuming too much vitamin A could also cause liver toxicity, but not from beta carotene. Symptoms of vitamin A overload Include: hair loss, headaches, dizziness and blurred vision ( Living strong, 2012).
