Formerly Material Safety Data Sheets

HazCom Requirement (g) requires chemical manufacturers, distributors, or importers provide Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for each hazardous chemical to downstream users to communicate information on these hazards Information contained in SDS largely same as MSDS, except SDSs required to be presented in consistent, user-friendly, 16-section format

SDS Requirements Includes information such as Properties of each chemical Physical, health & environmental health hazards Protective measures Safety precautions for handling, storing & transporting chemical Must be in English Provide specific minimum information as detailed in Appendix D

SDS Requirements Sections 1-8 General information about chemical, ID, hazards, composition, safe handling practices, & emergency control measures Sections 9-11, 16 Physical & chemical properties, stability & reactivity info, toxicological data, exposure control info, & other material including preparation date or last revision N/A, where applicable

SDS Requirements Sections For consistency with GHS OSHA won’t enforce because material regulated by other agencies EPA TSCA, FIFRA, RCRA, etc. DOT HMR CPSC

Sections  Section 1- Identification  Section 2- Hazard(s) Identification  Section 3- Composition/Information Ingredients  Section 4- First-Aid Measures  Section 5- Fire-Fighting Measures  Section 6- Accidental Release Measures  Section 7- Handling and Storage  Section 8-Exposure Controls/Personal Protective Equipment  Section 9- Physical and Chemical Properties  Section 10- Stability and Reactivity  Section 11- Toxicological Information  Section 12- Ecological Information (non-mandatory)  Section 13- Disposal Considerations (non-mandatory)  Section 14- Transportation Information (non-mandatory)  Section 15- Regulatory Information (non-mandatory)  Section 16- Other Information

Section 1: Identification Excerpts from OSHA Brief #3514

Section 2: Hazard(s) ID

Section 3: Composition/Info on Ingredients

Section 4: First Aid Measures

Section 5: Fire-Fighting Measures

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

Section 7: Handling & Storage

Section 8: Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Section 9: Physical & Chemical Properties

Section 10: Stability & Reactivity

Section 11: Toxicological Information

Section 12: Ecological Information (non-mandatory)

Section 13: Disposal Considerations (non-mandatory)

Section 14: Transport Information (non-mandatory)

Section 15: Regulatory Information (non-mandatory)

Section 16: Other Information

Employer Responsibilities Employers must ensure that SDSs readily accessible to employees for hazardous chemicals in workplace May keep SDSs in binder or on computers as long as employees have immediate access to information without leaving their work area when needed & backup available for rapid access to SDS in case of power outage or other emergency

Employer Responsibilities Furthermore, employers may want to designate person(s) responsible for obtaining & maintaining SDSs If employer does not have SDS, employer or designated person(s) should contact manufacturer to obtain it

SDS Workshop Review a HazCom 2012 compliant SDS that is used in your company/facility. Look at each section and discuss the important information in those sections
