VOLUMETRIC MIXED CONCRETE MOBILE VOLUMETRIC MIXERS

Approval Process  Upon written request by the contractor, the Department may approve the of concrete proportioned by volume.  The volumetric producer must submit and have approved a process control plan and product control plan. The plans must be approved by the Materials and Tests Unit.

Approval Process  Unless otherwise approved by the Department, use of concrete proportioned by volume shall be limited to Class B concrete and a maximum of 30 cubic yards per unit per day.

Equipment  The volumetric mixer shall be capable of carrying sufficient unmixed cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, water, and admixture, in separate compartments and able to correctly proportion materials for the specified mix.  The concrete mixing device shall be an augur type continuous mixer.  Mixing time necessary to produce uniform concrete shall be established by the contractor.

Calibration  Volume weight relationships will be based on calibration.  The proportioning devices shall be calibrated by the contractor prior to the start of each NCDOT job.  Calibrations will be performed in the presence of the Department and subject to approval from the Department.  Verification of the yield based on 94 pounds of cement may be required at any time.

 Have present during all batching operations a Certified Concrete Batch Technician.
