Digital Poetry Anthology Teacher Goals To publish a collection of student created poetry in hard copy and digital formats To extend student composition, revision & editing, and appreciation of poetry to a published level To integrate technology into the language arts curriculum

Technology Utilized Required Computer Lab with LAN & Internet Access LCD Projector MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Office Online Clipart Optional Scanner Digital Video/Still Camera Audio Recording Software Classroom Website (MS FrontPage)

Poetry Anthology Components Artistic Cover (scanned artwork or computer generated) Table of Contents Introduction Message from the Teacher Dedication Poetry Pages (chaptered by genre or student) Credits Completed anthology usually contains over 100 pages.

Step 1: Your Poetry Unit Instruction, reading, writing, and revision according to your curriculum Utilize wide variety of poems to write & from which to select favorite pieces Garner enthusiasm & interest in poetry. Encourage editing on peer, teacher, and individual levels.

Step 2: Establishing Network File Space

Step 3: Familiarize Students with Project Students type their collection of poems in MS Word and save to their class period & name on pre-established network file space Secure file space each class period. Students add clip art to their favorite 2-3 poems they wish to submit to the Poetry Anthology network file space

Step 4: Establish Design Teams Assign trustworthy students the task of creating the actual anthology. Select students according to: Accelerated/Honors classes Gifted IEP students who require enrichment activities Technology savvy students Outstanding writers Artists Students work in teams of 2-4 to complete various sections of the anthology. Helpful talents include: Layout & Design (artistic ability) Editing & Proofreading (great language skills) Computer Wiz (troubleshoot computer issues) Leadership (design team captain able to motivate & organize)

Step 5: Creating PowerPoint Slides Utilize PowerPoint to create the pages of your anthology. Most kids highly familiar with the software Toolbars in PowerPoint are mostly identical to those in Word Easy to merge & number pages and shuffle sections around when editing Digital version posted to website or burned to a CD should be accessible to most families (unlike Publisher or PageMaker programs) Supports fun “bells & whistles” to be discussed soon…

Step 5: Creating PowerPoint Slides SAMPLE INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS… To Create Power Point Slides of Student Poems: 1.Open the student’s poem file in Word. 2.Rt. Click and Copy text of poem from Word Document. 3.Open your Power Point (PPT) window. 4.Insert a Text Box on the PPT slide. 5.Rt. Click and Paste text of poem into Text Box. 6.Resize Font Size and Text Box as needed. SAVESAVESAVESAVE To Add Student Clip Art Into the Power Point Slide: 1.Open the student’s poem in Microsoft Word. 2.Rt. Click and Copy Clip Art from the Word Document. 3.Open your Power Point window. 4.Rt. Click and Paste Clip Art into the PPT slide. 5.Resize and Move Clip Art as needed. SAVESAVESAVESAVE

Step 5: Creating PowerPoint Slides Teacher merges PowerPoint Slides into one Poetry Anthology PowerPoint File Print out pages of anthology and submit hardcopies to design teams for final proofreading and layout analysis. Completed anthology may be printed, copied & bound, published on the web, and/or burned to CD for student access and enjoyment.
