Key Terms:  Lifestyle Disease: A disease caused partly by unhealthy behaviors and partly by other factors.  Risk Factor: anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems.  Sedentary: not taking part in physical activity on a regular basis.

More Key Terms:  Health: the state of well-being in which all of the components of health—physical, emotional, social, mental, spiritual, and environmental—are in balance.  Value: a strong belief or ideal  Wellness: the achievement of a person’s best in all six components of health  Health Literacy: knowledge of health information needed to make good choices about your health.

Influences on your Health:  Heredity: the traits you inherited from your parents (ie. Diabetes)  Social: the relationships you have with other people (can be positive or negative)  Environmental: your surroundings, the area where you live, and all the things you have contact with  Cultural: the values, beliefs, and practices shared by people that have a common background.

Health Risk Behaviors

Top Six Health Risk Behaviors  Sedentary Lifestyle— not taking part in physical activity on a regular basis.  Alcohol & Other Drugs—can cause liver disease, certain types of cancer, heart disease, and brain damage.  Sexual Activity—outside of a committed relationship, puts you at risk for HIV, other STI’s and unplanned pregnancy.  Behaviors that cause injuries—not using a seatbelt *(biggest cause of death chart)  Tobacco Use—single most preventable leading cause of death in the US.  Poor Eating Habits— can either increase or lower your chances of developing many diseases.
