ISLAM AND THE EARLY FILIPINO RELIGION Civics Lesson 3

Pagan Beliefs Forefathers worshipped their god they called Batala or Bathala. For them Batala created the world, the heavens and man. They believe in the power of nature, that spirits lurk around us and that there is an entity that is most powerful - they worshipped the trees, mountains, rivers, wind and all those which comprise nature.

Their priests were called katalonan or babaylan. Forefathers believed that worshipping and offering of sacrifices to ask for help or to please their gods would grant their wishes

Islam Religion Islam is an Arabic word which means peace. History: The Islam religion began in the Philippines when the interaction between the Filipinos and the Arab happened while trading in Asia. The Arab first traded in Sulu. Tuan Mashaika and Makhdum Karim first introduced Islam to Filipinos. The first who became Muslims were those who married the Arab traders. The religion was established when the Sultanate government was organized.

Islamic Beliefs and Teachings Mohammed is the prophet who founded the Islam religion. Allah is their God. The followers are called Muslims. They call their bible the Koran. Imam is their highest Muslim priest. Rhutba is their sermon. And their place of worship is called mosque. Mohammed is the messenger of Allah. They believe in angels. They believe in the day of judgment

Five Pillars of the Islam Religion Shahada - is the sincere and faithful devotion of Allah Salat - praying 5 times a day except on Friday. Friday they go to mosque to worship Allah. Zakat - giving alms to their fellow Muslims who are in need, orphaned, sick and victims of calamities. Puasa - fasting during the Ramadan. Ramadan is the most holy celebration (enjoyment, doing hard-labor, gossipying, lying, indecent actions, smoking and drinking are forbidden) This is done for days

Hadj - pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia Mecca is the holiest city of Islam because it is the birthplace of the Prophet Mohammed. It is the Great Mosque in Mecca where the most sacred Muslim shrine is found. This shrine is called Ka'aba. Pilgrims to Mecca walk around the kaaba 7 times and touch the sacred black stone. After the Hadj, the pilgrim is then called a Hadji.
