Earth Facts. Gallegos Elementary Science/Tech. Dept.

Earth is the 3 rd planet from the Sun.

It takes the Earth 1 year or 365 days to orbit/revolve around the Sun.

Earth is a water planet.

Around 75% of the Earth is water.

Of all the water on Earth we can only drink less than 1% of it.

The Earth is divided into 4 hemispheres.

If the Earth is a sphere. What is a hemisphere?

Then a hemisphere is half a sphere.

There are the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Northern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere We live here.

There are the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. Western Hemisphere Eastern Hemisphere We live here.

Earth also has an imaginary line called an axis. Axis

The Earth rotates/spins on its axis.

It takes the Earth 1 day or 24 hours to rotate/spin on its axis. Axis

The Earth’s rotation on it’s axis also gives us night and day. Daytime Night time Axis

The axis of the Earth also shows that the Earth is tilted to one side. Axis

The tilt of the Earth gives us Summer and Winter. Axis

When the axis of the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the Sun it is our Summer. Axis Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

When the axis of the Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun it is our Winter. Axis Winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

The 4 Seasons Summer Spring Winter Fall

Review the following Earth Facts. Earth takes 1 year or 365 days to orbit/revolve around the Sun. Around 75% of the Earth is water. Earth has 4 hemispheres. We live in the Northern Hemisphere It takes the Earth 1 day or 24 hours to spin on its axis. Day and night are caused by Earth’s rotation on its axis. The seasons such as Summer and Winter are caused by the Earth’s tilt.
