Task Process Conclusion Evaluation A WebQuest Designed for High School Biology By Seth Blakeslee We hear about cancer all the time, but often the terms used to describe treatment seem a bit intimidating. Today we will examine a few of these terms and will find that several main treatment options use the same basic mechanisms that we have already learned.

Process Conclusion Evaluation You are an intern at Dr. House’s cancer research center. In order to prove yourself, you need to gain some basic knowledge about treatment options. Today you will turn in a summary of your research, a diagram explaining how one of the two options works, and a scenario where one option might work better than the other. Use the buttons on the left to navigate. You can visit any part whenever you want.

Task Conclusion Evaluation On this assignment, you will have three tasks that you must fulfill. Click on each of these labeled tasks to see what you must do.

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Click to watch the movie, then go to each of the other links to learn more about treatment options for cancer. Use these and other websites to do further research to find: - How they work (main mechanisms) -History (when they were developed, notable people) - Key facts (How long does it take? What are expected side effects?) You will write these down on a sheet of paper, which you will turn in to me at the end of the activity. Chemotherapy Radiation Therapy

Step 2 Step 1 Step 3 Each of the therapies you just researched operates using a basic mechanism which we have discussed in class. Chemotherapy utilizes diffusion, while radiation therapy damages the cancer cell by introducing mutations in its DNA. Create a labeled diagram of one of these two mechanisms. You can draw your diagram by hand, or you can do it on the computer. You will turn this in with your research.

Step 2 Step 3 Step 1 Cancer is one of the most common sicknesses in the world today.. If it has not affected you personally, there is a very good chance it has affected someone you know. Now you will write a journal entry describing what life might be like for a person going through cancer therapy. If you have experienced this yourself, share what it was like for you. Talk about how you feel, who you see, how you eat, etc. If this activity is too uncomfortable for you, write from a fictional character‘s point of view.

Task Process Conclusion Evaluation Congratulations! You have been accepted as an intern in Dr. House’s Clinic! While you may be finished with today’s activity, here are some extra resources that you might check out to find out more about cancer and different treatment options. What is Cancer?
