Washington DC Monuments and Memorials by Ms. Callan’s Class Grade 4 Room 11

The US Capital Building By: Maeve Swanton and Sophie Shimansky

The US Capital Building was built for the Senate and the House of Representatives to work in.

It has been home of the House of Representatives and the Senate since the 1800’s.

There they have meetings to pass laws and make decisions for our country.

The Building has 540 rooms separated into 5 floors.

It has a white iron dome feet high. It is on top of what is now called Capital Hill.

Every president except George Washington lived in the White House. The President lives there for four years.

In the White House people make important decisions.

There are one hundred thirty two rooms in the White House.

At one time the White House was destroyed by the British and James Hobun and other people rebuilt it.

A fun thing at the White House is that there is a pool.

The Smithsonian Castle is in charge of all sixteen museums. The Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum.

The Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial By Jennifer and Isabella

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a long granite wall with the names of over 58,000 men and women who died or went missing during the Vietnam War. About 1000 names on the wall are missing people.

Next to the wall there are 2 statues. One of 3 nurses and a wounded soldier and one of 3 soldiers.

People leave gifts and flowers at the wall to honor the people who gave their lives in the war. If there is a diamond next to the name the person is dead and if there is a plus next to the name the person is missing.

In total the wall is 493 feet 6 inches.

The Lincoln Memorial is a very special site. The Memorial was built to honor the nation’s 16 TH president…LINCOLN!

Lincoln is located inside a chamber located on a grass mall.

The Lincoln Statue stands 19 ft tall and weighs 175 tons!!!!! The walls contain the most famous speeches he gave in his life time.

The columns surrounding the walls stand for the 36 states in the union at the time of Lincolns death.

The National Mall in Washington D.C is two miles long. It has 3 parts. One is monuments, and there is a pool, and a garden.

The National Mall is surrounded by monuments. Some include the U.S. Capital, The Smithsonian, and The Lincoln Memorial.

The Air and Space Museum is a small part of Smithsonian, which is a group of museums and monuments connected by underground tunnels.

The Jefferson Memorial is a memorial to honor Thomas Jefferson. He was the 3 rd President of the U.S.

In the center of the building is a 19 foot tall statue of Jefferson The Jefferson Memorial is surrounded by cherry blossom trees given by Japan.

On the walls of the building are inscriptures of the Declaration of Independence! Thomas Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence!

The Arlington National Cemetery is a cemetery for people who served in armed forces.

The Arlington National Cemetery is used for burying people in the armed forces, to honor them.

The Arlington National Cemetery has more than 260,000 people buried there.

The Arlington National Cemetery contains veterans from war, Presidents, and astronauts.

The Washington Monument is a four sided structure. The Washington Monument is 555 feet,5 1/8 inches,and 169,29 meters. Fifty flags surround it and it symbolizes the 50 states.

The Washington Monument was built between 1848 through Robert Mill created the Washington Monument in Baltimore, MD. The Monument stood incomplete for 25 years.

The Washington Monument towers over everything in Washington DC and is one of the tallest structures in the world. The Washington Monument still stands and you may still visit it.
