Introduction O People die every day. Sometimes it can be someone we don’t know fighting in a war far away. Sometimes it can hit closet to home. Think about someone you have loved but has passed away. Perhaps it was a grandparent or a friend. Did you get to say goodbye? Suppose you hadn’t. Could it be that there many things left unsaid? Would there be any unsettled emotions? O The poem that we’re going to be reading today, Annabel Lee, Edgar didn’t get to say good bye to the person that he loved. Not many people are so fortunate. Think about the person you have loved and lost as we read through Annabel Lee.

Reflect O Now that you have read the poem, Take some time to think back to the discussions that we have had in class about poetry and the different elements used in it. O What are some things that we learned about Poe?

Reflect Continued… O Isn’t it sad how he didn’t get to say goodbye? Today he’s going to get the opportunity to do it, so to speak. We are going to be making RAFTS. RAFTS are a way in which we can put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. There are 4 parts in a RAFT: Role, Audience, Format and Topic. O Role: What is your role? Are you going to be a person, thing, animal, or idea? What do I already know about this role? What do I need to find out? O Audience: Who are you writing for? O Format: What type of form will your writing take? Is it going to be a poem, a journal entry, a letter? O And Topic: What do you want to write about?

Assignment Your job will be to write a ( words) goodbye letter to Annabel Lee. Your role will be Edgar Allan Poe and you will be expressing your undying love for your late maiden as well as expressing nostalgia. The next slide provides an example I have done for the assignment. When you have written your RAFT, you may upload it to the class blog. Have a wonderful break!

Assignment Example My Dearest Annabel Lee, The ocean itself cannot hold the tears that I’ve cried for you since you’ve gone. The world is gray, life seems meaningless. Your eyes, your smile, and laugh hold a special place in my heart. Everything reminds me of you. The high tide outside, the gulls, and the breeze. When the moon beams, it brings me dreams of you and our time together. Whenever I see the stars in the skies, it reminds me of your beautiful eyes, my love. I love you and always will. When I was with you, I felt alive. You brought me happiness that no one else could. You brought to me a love that I never understood before. I remember how we would walk hand in hand, by the kingdom. Those moments with you made me so happy. The air is getting colder, out here by the sea. The high beings of Heaven will never understand the love between you and me. The wind that came out of the cloud by night, I dare it to come again. It can never separate us, my darling, my darling, my Annabel Lee. Forever Yours, Edgar
