Roslyn Middle School Math Department Back to School Night

What is Algebra 1 Common Core? High school course based on Common Core State Standards Culminates in June with a NYS Regents Objectives: o Path to college and career readiness o Foster deeper understanding o Abstract and quantitative reasoning o For more information…. engageny.orgengageny.org

This is not your older child’s Algebra! (or yours, for that matter…) The cost of 3 markers and 2 pencils is $1.80. The cost of 4 markers and 6 pencils is $2.90. What is the cost of each item? Now A high school drama club is putting on their annual theater production. There is a maximum of 800 tickets for the show. The tickets cost $6 before the day of the show and $9 on the day of the show. To meet the expenses of the show, the club must sell at least $5,000 worth of tickets. a)Write a system of inequalities that represents this situation. b)The club sells 440 tickets before the day of the show. Is it possible to sell enough additional tickets on the day of the show to at least meet the expenses of the show? Justify your answer.

What is expected of your child? Interpret and analyze situations Apply concepts and procedures to new situations Develop a deeper understanding of the workings of mathematics Persevere in solving problems through multiple attempts

How can you check on your child’s progress? Ask to see your child’s Grade Log Includes: All homework assignments for the quarter All grades acquired within a quarter Your signature is REQUIRED for each quiz and test reported Algebra

Flipping The Classroom

WHAT is Flipping? Traditional Classroom In Class: Teacher lecture Demonstration Independent practice Outside Class: Practice problems Flipped Classroom Outside class: Watch recorded lectures Follow model problems In Class: Teacher facilitates learning Discuss and apply what was learned from the video lesson

WHY do students like Flipping? Outside class, students… Go at their own pace Can replay portions of video lecture Use technology Can keep pace with the class when absent Review easily for exams In class, students… Have more personalized contact time with teacher Gain opportunities to work with others Experience more engaging activities

WHY do parents like Flipping? Parents can watch the videos to support their child’s learning Parents have a firsthand look at the math curriculum Information Links: o Flipped Classroom Infographic Flipped Classroom Infographic o The Flipped Classroom: Myths vs. Reality The Flipped Classroom: Myths vs. Reality

When do we begin reviewing for the Regents? We have already begun! Spiral Sets (Q1 and Q2) o Assigned as homework on the night of a test o Includes topics from all previous units Mini-quizzes (Q3 and Q4) o Graded o 5 mini-quizzes = 1 quiz o Must be signed by a parent/guardian prior to being handed in o Includes topics from all previous units Regents Review Sessions o 5 weekly 40-minute review sessions o Before or after school o Each week’s session covers specific topics o Typically begins 6 weeks prior to the Regents

In Closing: What Can You Do? enthusiasm Show enthusiasm for your child’s study of mathematics be persistent Encourage your child to be persistent; make sure that he or she knows that mathematics requires patience, practice and time to think and reflect ask questions attend extra help Urge your child to ask questions during class or attend extra help for additional assistance review class notes watch FLIP videos Encourage your child to review class notes every night and watch FLIP videos repeatedly
