Final Digestion and Absorption

Key Terms Small Intestine- part of digestive system where most chemical digestion and absorption takes place takes place Gallbladder-the organ that stores bile Liver-largest organ inside the body, its role is to produce bile Bile-a substance that is produced by liver and it breaks up fat Pancreas-a triangular organ that lies between the stomach and the first part of the small intestine, the pancreas produces enzymes that flow into the small intestine and help break down starches, proteins, and fats. Villus-finger like projections that line the small intestine and increase surface area and absorb nutrient molecules Large intestine-the last section of the digestive system which contains bacteria that feeds on the material passing through. Water is absorbed into bloodstream here and the remaining material is readied for elimination from the body. Rectum-a short tube at the end of the large intestine, waste material is compressed into a solid form here. Anus-muscular opening at the end of the rectum, waste material eliminated from the body here

The Small Intestine What are the functions of the small intestine? Absorption of nutrients Most chemical digestion occurs here Contains villi that Increase surface area And aid in absorption

The Liver Located in the upper right portion of abdomen Largest organ inside the body Breaks down medicines and eliminates nitrogen from the body Role in the digestive system is to produce BILE, a substance that breaks up fat particles Bile flows from the liver Into the gallbladder, the organ that stores bile.

The Pancreas Triangular organ that lies between the stomach and first part of the small intestine Produces enzymes that flow into the small intestine and help break down starches, proteins, and fats Fiber in food doesn’t get broken down

The Large Intestine Last section of the digestive system Contains bacteria that feeds on material passing through The material in the large intestine contains water and undigested food Water is absorbed into the bloodstream Remaining material is readied for elimination from the body Ends in a short tube called the rectum where waste material is compressed into a solid form Waste eliminated from the body through the anus
