Agenda & News Friday, 2/13/2015 is the last day of the 4th 6 weeks. Monday, 2/16/2015 is a student holiday Test corrections – Need to be done this week Unit 5 – Linear functions and Applications Today we will discuss an introduction to linear functions Rate of Change aka Slope

Reminders In the last unit, we learned about relations and functions. A specific function we touched on was linear function. Remember, Linear functions forms Lines. To be a function, the x-value can not repeat. Must pass the vertical line test!

Activity - Outside We are going skiing. Get you jackets on! It is going to be cold! I need Videographers In our activity, the bowling ball was the skier. The concrete represents different parts of a ski resort. What did we experience?

The Adventures of Slope Dude Puff Puff Positive Nice...Negative This is ZERO fun! Undef ined

Summary 4 types of Slope Positive Negative Zero Undefined – the worst curse word EVER in Algebra! We always read our graphs from left to right, when determining the slope of a line.

Rise Run Main Idea: Rate of Change AKA “Slope” Ratio of the difference in the dependent variable to the difference in the independent variable. Δ, Delta, means Change x Δ Dependent Δ Dependent___ Δ Independent Δ Y____ Δ X Main Idea: Rate of Change AKA “Slope” Rise Run

Slope Art Write you name in pencil on the line below only using straight lines. Grab different colored crayons. ____Undefined Slope ____Zero Slope ____Positive Slope ____Negative Slope

Finding slope using a graph A constant rate of change means that something changes by the same amount during equal intervals. A graph that has a constant rate of change is a line, and the rate of change is the same as the slope of the line.

Slope Slope is represented with the letter m. Below are ways to find slope.

Finding slope using a graph rise = 4 m= rise run run = 5 m= 4/5

Finding Slope using graphs - TPS

Finding slope using points Using the formula, find the slope of a line through A(-2,1) and B(6,7).

Finding slope using points - TPS Using the formula, find the slope of a line through T(2,5) and S(4,7). Using the formula, find the slope of a line through C(-1,3) and D(3,-2).

Horizontal Lines Find the slope of A(1,2) and B(4,2). These lines are our ZERO fun lines.

Vertical Lines Find the slope of C(4,2) and D(4,-1). These lines are our UNDEFINED lines.
