The solvent needs to be sufficiently aggressive to remove the contaminants, particularly the wax, without effecting the underlying paint surface. 2 3. Immediately wipe the cleaned area with a clean, dry cloth. 13 2 Cloth Cleaning Method: Solvent/Dirt Removal. The next stage of the cleaning process requires that the residual solution consisting of the waxes, dirt and oil suspended in the solvent is wiped from the surface using a second, clean, white, lint free cloth. This step is important because if the solvent is left to evapourate from the surface then the contaminants which are suspended in the solution will be deposited back onto the surface of the paint. Once again choice of solvent is important. If the solvent is too volatile it will flash off before it can be wiped away. This problem is even more pronounced in high temperatures. An example is Methyl Ethyl Ketone which is both highly aggressive and will effect the paint finish and also is highly volatile.
