Wind energy. There is evidence that wind energy was used to propel boats along the Nile as early as 5000BC. The earliest known windmills were in Persia.
Cassie West and Shameka Marshall. How does wind energy occur? Wind is a form of solar energy caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun.

Introduction Presentation Contents Using the Presentations Reading Slides Grammar Review Slides Practice Slides Notes to the Teacher Table of Contents

Welcome to the Understanding and Using English Grammar Teacher Resource Disc These PowerPoint® presentations provide visual aids for teachers to use in class. Each presentation is designed as a beyond-the-book activity to be used after the chapter has been studied in class. Each chapter contains a thematic reading embedded with the target structures. Brief reviews of key grammar points, designed to further illustrate the grammar, follow each paragraph. Each section is then reinforced with short practices. Introduction

Each presentation contains a set of slides based around a paragraph of the reading. Each set of slides is made up of three different types of slides that deal with the grammar points in that section. 1)Paragraph slides – contain the reading with embedded grammar structures 2)Grammar review slides – review key grammar structures 3)Practice slides – provide an informal means of assessing comprehension Back to Contents Presentation Contents

Using the Presentations The presentations and their readings can be used in a variety of ways, but they all are intended to be used after the bulk of a chapter has been covered in class. The individual paragraphs can be printed out and assigned for homework, or they can be handed out in class for pairs or small groups to study. They can also simply be projected onscreen for the whole class to study together. The practice slides are equally flexible and can be used as whole class reviews, pair or small group work, or informal, individual quizzes. Using the Presentations

A variety of reading types such as informational, academic, and narrative. One theme per chapter used for all the readings, reviews, and practices. Reading Slides The earliest known use of wind power was the sailboat, and from this technology windmills were invented. The first windmills were developed in Persia in A.D. They were used for pumping water and grinding grain. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the first mills in western Europe were used for irrigation, grain- grinding, and saw-milling of timber. In the 19th century, when the steam engine was invented, the use of wind power declined in Europe. But thousands of miles to the west in the U.S., the next phase of wind power was being developed -- windmills were used by cowboys and farmers to provide water for livestock and families. And in the late 19th century, they were used by scientists to generate electricity.

Restate the key grammar points from the chapter. Use examples from the paragraph or within the theme of the reading. Grammar Review Slides

Practice Slides A range of practice types, from more structured to more open-ended, provide an informal means of assessing comprehension.
