Presentation transcript:

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce you, or refresh your knowledge, and help you to identify a leadership style, which you believe best fits your personality. Although, several leadership styles exist and will be defined in this interactive presentation. Nevertheless, the focus is two styles : Transformational and Situational Leadership However, you may find neither one of these styles fit your personality, is detrimental to your character, and is difficult to implement. Either way, by the end of the presentation, you will have identified characteristics, and a style, which fits you best.

Transitional Those having this style motivate followers by appealing to their own self interest.* This style encompasses four types of behavior: (1) Contingent Reward (2) Passive Management by Exception (3) Active Management by Exception (4) Laissez- Faire Leadership (leadingtoday.org)Situational The person possessing this styles adapts his or her leadership behavior to the followers maturity level or to the situation.* Attributes associated with this style is: directing, interacting, and guiding. All based on the ability, situation, and maturity level and willingness or lack of from the follower. (Marzano, et al).Transformational Persons having this quality implement new ideas, inspiring those around them.* Active qualities of this style are: Individual consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, idealized influence. (Marzano, et al) Laissez Faire Leading with this style is laid-back, relaxed at best. The style is applicable when supervising high- performers.* Attributes of this style is hands-off, non- evaluative, leader is mostly concerned with completing personal assignment and providing anecdotes as needed. (leadingtoday.org)

Are you flexible? Is your flexibility contingency based, motivated by various personalities, your mood, or situations? At anytime, a leader may find him or herself flowing from one leadership dimension to another. Many of the leadership models have similarities, yet how aspects are used determines the situation and resources involved. Identifying the dominate leadership style and practicing it is essential. Being able to determine the appropriate leadership takes tenacity when observing, modeling, training, and encouraging a team of professionals.

“Transformation leadership is the implementation of new ideas….Leaders dominating the use of this style are “flexible, adaptable…” network charismatically, and “improve those around them” (Johannsen ¶ 4). “Transactional leaders seem to motivate followers by appealing to their own self-interest” (Leading Today ¶ 2). Some employees usually buy-in to this leadership style, because they recognize what is in for them. However, any leader using this style must prepare to sell their theories and offer tangible rewards to their employees.

Situational leadership style merely defines how a leader should adjust his or her style to fit the needs of the employees. Becoming adept to situations and determining when to use social or task-driven approach is ideal to situational leadership (Johannsen ¶ 7). Laissez Faire is a leadership style which is relaxed and in theory hands-off. This method can intertwine with various leadership styles, yet is mostly used when managing “highly motivated direct reports” (Johannsen ¶ 4).

The presentation will pause to give you an opportunity to complete Activity #3 and perhaps quickly review the information you documented in Activity #1 & #2 Do things right Do the right things Administer Innovative Accepts status quo Seek change Inspire people to change Motivate others Rely on control I did not realize what leadership entails. Am I a leader? Do I… Seek predictability Rely on Trust Take initiative

Leaders are change agents What worked for you yesterday may not work for you today. Understanding the time, the people, and cultures are imperative to your success as a leader. Leading contemporarily is necessary in an environment, which is forever changing. As a leader you are accountable when you do not want to be accountable; you lead from the front – meaning all eyes are on you. You are the driver of social skills, the epitome of doing the right thing, as well as being flexible, sociable, and ethical. Yes, it is about character, but not solely about you. It is about those around you and how synergy becomes the vibe, strengthening others to plan, implement, provision, and to be progressive forces, understanding the culture, while inspiring others to change. Your timing may not be perfect, but you need to be mindful of time, know how to utilize your time, and how to function within the time you are allotted. It is doing - what you do not want to do, knowing it needs to be done, and implementing in the right way….again, doing the right thing and doing it moving….

Transformed defined: Transformed defined: Transform means to change in nature, condition, or character. As such, when a metamorphosis takes place, you have modified from the inside out. This change, will be most effective in your profession. Transforming is more than a spiritual walk or new-found characteristic to add to a resume’ – it is a lifestyle, which is the conscience of life, and betterment of those, in which you interact with. As you pursue to establish yourself in your profession, or perhaps looking at advancing within education, especially in the private education sector, transformation is critical. Transformation, scripturally is the essence of Romans 12:2, KJV: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. The Situational Leadership Style is most effective in an educational learning community because it allows the leader to exercise various attributes of leadership, while transitioning from one leadership method to the other. Moreover, employees expect leaders to develop visions and strategies, and effectively seek change – diverse leaders recognize this expectation and exceed. Nevertheless, what better way to show diversity, understanding, and build trust then for an administrator leader to adept his or her leadership style (Johannsen, ¶ 7) to the situation, employee, school climate, time management, and task-at- hand.

At this point you may have determined Transformational and Situational Leadership is not one without the other, or perhaps you may have determined a way to separate the two. My recommendation is for those seeking higher-level employment, more challenging professions, to understand your direction, your path, and examine yourself – identifying your characteristics, and those things which interest you in the profession of your choice. In addition, remember the leadership styles shown in this presentation are few of many and you must choose the one best suiting your needs, staff, and environment. How will you influence others? Will it be through the use of Transformational, Situational, Transitional, or Laissez Faire leadership or a mix of several. You choose and determine your future.
