Take a look at the following list of cognates, and write down what you think they mean in English. Be sure to write everything down. 1. Café 2. B ásquetbol 3. Dirección 4. Limonada 5. Minuto 6. Universidad 7. Vocabulario 8. Estudiante

 L EARNING SPANISH ACTUALLY HELPS TO INCREASE, EXPAND, AND IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH VOCABULARY.  H OW IS THIS POSSIBLE ? T HERE ARE MANY WORDS THAT LOOK, SOUND, AND MEAN THE SAME THING IN E NGLISH AND S PANISH.  T HESE ARE CALLED COGNATES.  C OGNATES ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY ALLOW US TO EXPAND OUR VOCABULARY IN S PANISH AND MAKE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS BETWEEN BOTH LANGUAGES.

 ATTENTION :  Cinco, cuatro, tres, dos,uno…cero (silencio)  O  Profe says….nada nada  Estudiante says….limonada

 Greet the teacher and fellow students in Spanish.  Be ready to work as soon as you get into class.  Be RESPECTFUL towards the teacher and fellow students.  Be in your assigned seat BEFORE the bell rings. Otherwise you are tardy.  NO food, drink, chewing gum or candy is allowed.  ABSOLUTELY NO electronic devices. If I see it or hear it, even if you are just checking the time, you will not be allowed in the classroom until you put it away!  Bring ALL of your materials to class EVERYDAY.  Turn in your assignments on the desk next to Profe’s

 DO NOT get out of your seat without permission.  When I am speaking, you should not be (Goes with RESPECT)  NO personal grooming in my classroom. This includes brushing hair, putting on make-up and applying lotion.  Have ONLY Spanish materials on desk.  Listen and follow directions the FIRST time they are given.  NO SLEEPING IN CLASS!!!!! It is disrespectful and rude!!!

 NO Throwing objects in my class! This will result in an immediate detention.  Follow the discipline rules of NMS and the school district  Restroom Policy – Student MUST ask me for permission to use the restroom. Student’s must receive signature from me in their planner.

I T IS SPOKEN BY ALMOST 400 MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE !  H ALF OF THE POPULATION IN THE W ESTERN H EMISPHERE SPEAKS S PANISH, MAKING IT THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE FOR AS MANY PEOPLE AS E NGLISH IN THIS REGION OF THE WORLD.  T HE S PANISH - SPEAKING POPULATION IN THE U NITED S TATES HAS SKYROCKETED IN RECENT YEARS, MAKING PROFICIENCY IN THE LANGUAGE ALL THE MORE IMPORTANT !

 S PANISH CAN BE AN INCREDIBLY MARKETABLE SKILL AND ASSET THAT CAN GIVE YOU A SIGNIFICANT ADVANTAGE OVER THE COMPETITION IN OUR GLOBAL ECONOMY.  D UE TO THE INCREASE IN THE S PANISH - SPEAKING POPULATION IN THE U.S., KNOWING BOTH E NGLISH AND S PANISH WILL CONTINUE TO BECOME MORE AND MORE VALUABLE IN THE JOB MARKET.  I NDIVIDUALS THAT ARE BILINGUAL HAVE MORE CAREER CHOICES AND CAN MAKE MORE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN.
