Things to know about magnets A magnet has two ends called poles North poles point north. South poles point south. The north pole of one pole attracts the south pole of the other. Like poles push away (repel), unlike poles pull (attract). Magnets act at a distance. Magnets attract only magnetic materials. Cut a magnet in half, each new magnet will have a north pole and a south pole.
