FIRST CORINTHIANS How to Live in a Pagan World
1 st Corinthians 6: Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
The Great Contrast
1. A Self-Evident Truth Do you not know“ Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?”
1.1 We Can’t Pick & Choose Among Sins idolaters covetous revilersVs “Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners” Idolaters Covetous Revilers=abusive language 1. A Self-Evident Truth
2. A People without a Future Vs. 11 “…will inherit the kingdom of God” Future “Has-beens” Since it is a Righteous Kingdom the kingdom is righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit –Romans 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
3. A People with a Past Vs.11 “And such were some of you”
4. A Change in Direction were Butbut butVs. 11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God”
4.1 A Change in Condition Vs.11 “And such were some of you. But you were washed…” NLT: “but now your sins have been washed away” Weymouth: “But now you have had every stain washed off” 4. A Change in Direction
4.2 A Change of Heart You Can’t Be Saved Without Being Born Again “And such were some of you. But… you were sanctified” Weymouth: “Now you have been set apart as holy” 2 nd Corinthians 5:17, NLT “What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!” 4. A Change in Direction
4.3 A Change in Standing Vs. 11 “But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” Weymouth: “Now you have been pronounced free from guilt” NLT: “You have been made right with God” 4. A Change in Direction
5. A Work of God “You were washed” “You were sanctified” “You were justified” “in the name of the Lord Jesus” “and by the Spirit of our God”
